The Story Behind the Dorcas Collection

At the Dorcas Collection, my mission is inspired by a powerful belief: “It’s better to be prepared for an opportunity than to get an opportunity and have to go get prepared.” This philosophy drives everything I do, from curating our collections to empowering women in the community.

The boutique is named after the biblical figure Dorcas, mentioned in Acts 9:36, who was known for her acts of kindness and dedication to helping others. Dorcas also was a woman full of good works and charitable deeds, embodying the spirit of generosity and compassion. Dorcas, is also my name given at birth, which makes what I do very personal and unique.
This scripture serves as a cornerstone for the values and mission.

The Dorcas Collection was born out of a desire to provide plus-size women with fashion that not only fits beautifully but also exudes confidence and readiness for any occasion. Just as Dorcas used her skills to support and uplift those around her, The boutique aims to empower women by offering stylish and comfortable clothing that helps them feel prepared for every opportunity that comes their way.

For those who may not know me, my name is Dorcas, and I am the proud owner of the Dorcas Collection, a plus-size boutique dedicated to empowering women through fashion. My journey into the fashion industry was driven by a deep desire to provide stylish, comfortable, and confidence-boosting clothing for plus-size women, a segment often overlooked in mainstream fashion.

I’ve been through some not-so-good times myself. I’ve experienced mental abuse, struggled with low self-esteem, and often didn’t know what to do. These experiences motivated me to start this journey, aiming to help plus-size women who have been body-shamed by significant others and family. I wanted to create a space where these women could find clothing that not only fits beautifully but also makes them feel seen, valued, and confident.

The Dorcas Collection offers a wide range of plus-size fashion items, from everyday wear to special occasion outfits. I specialize in curating collections that cater to the unique needs and preferences of plus-size women, ensuring that every piece we offer is both fashionable and functional. Our products are designed to solve the common problems our clients face, such as finding clothing that fits well, looks great, and feels comfortable.

What sets us apart is my commitment to body positivity and empowerment. Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

One lesson I had to unlearn was that my worth was tied to others’ perceptions of me. Growing up and even into my early adult years, I struggled with low self-esteem due to body-shaming from significant others and family. This deeply affected my confidence and made me doubt my abilities.

When I started the Dorcas Collection, I realized that in order to help other plus-size women feel confident and empowered, I first needed to change how I saw myself. I had to unlearn the idea that my value was dependent on fitting into society’s narrow standards of beauty. Embracing my worth and believing in my mission has been crucial to building a business that uplifts and empowers other women. This journey taught me that true confidence comes from within, and it’s something I strive to instill in every woman who walks through our doors.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

I’m pivoting now!
In the early days of the Dorcas Collection, my focus was primarily on sales, aiming to provide the best fashion options for plus-size women. This is because of what I saw other boutique owners do. Now after months of low or no sales at all, I realized that my mission could be so much more impactful. I began to pivot my business approach to not only offer stylish clothing but also to provide valuable information and support to our customers.

Now, when customers shop at the Dorcas Collection, they don’t just leave with a new outfit; they gain insights into body positivity, styling tips for their unique body shapes, and a sense of community and empowerment. This shift has transformed our boutique into a space where women feel celebrated and informed, making their shopping experience enriching and supportive. By adding this layer of value, I hope to inspire confidence and self-love in every woman who engages with our brand.
