We recently connected with Dee Davis and have shared our conversation below.
Dee, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
In my career journey, I’ve learned firsthand the importance of taking the moment and making it perfect, rather than waiting for the elusive ‘perfect moment’. There’s never a perfect time in life or career; you have to be ready, not get ready, and then seize the moment!
One defining moment in my professional career occurred during the Covid pandemic, which presented significant challenges but also opportunities for growth and innovation. It was during this time that my husband, Noble Dre Ali, and I decided to create Noble Alkhemy, a venture aimed at uplifting our community through healing arts and culture.
Instead of succumbing to the difficulties of the pandemic, we chose to take charge and make the most of what we had. We converted our basement into a healing arts studio, and I pursued my yoga teacher certification despite the obstacles. This decision not only allowed me to become a certified yoga instructor but also enabled me to offer classes, retreats, and workshops tailored to people of color, addressing a crucial need within our community.
This pivotal moment changed the trajectory of my career by teaching me the importance of seizing opportunities and taking action, even when conditions are less than ideal. It reinforced the notion that there’s never a perfect moment, and waiting for one may mean missing out on valuable opportunities for growth and impact. By embracing the mindset of making the most of every moment, I’ve been able to navigate uncertainty and create meaningful change in both my career and community.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Greetings! I’m deeply passionate about health and wellness, and my journey into this field has been both purposeful and transformative. It all began during my time as a Patient Care Navigator at Columbia Medical Center and later at Montefiore, where I witnessed firsthand the importance of not only treating ailments but also preventing them through holistic approaches.
This realization prompted me to make a bold transition from the treatment side to the prevention side of healthcare. I pursued a Master’s in Health Education to deepen my understanding of health promotion, community outreach, and preventative care. This educational journey honed my skills and expertise in these areas, laying the foundation for my future endeavors.
One pivotal moment came when my employer sponsored me to obtain a certificate in grant writing. This experience broadened my perspective and ignited a passion for making a broader impact beyond the confines of the hospital setting. With newfound knowledge and enthusiasm, I embarked on a journey to leverage my skills in grant writing and health education to empower communities and promote holistic wellness. I am now manager of government contracts and gift processing for Dreamyard, an arts education center in the South Bronx working with Bronx youth, families, and schools to build pathways towards equity and opportunity through education, wellness and the arts.
This journey culminated in the creation of Noble Alkhemy, a venture dedicated to promoting healing arts and culture within our community. Through Noble Alkhemy, I’ve been able to combine my expertise in health education with my love for yoga and holistic wellness practices. We prioritize authenticity, inclusivity, and empowerment in all aspects of our work, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and valued.
Additionally, I obtained a certificate in meditation, delving into the diverse landscape of meditation practices. I was particularly drawn to unconventional methods like laughter, coloring, and walking meditation, which resonated deeply with me. These unique modalities inspired me to integrate them into my personal practice and professional offerings.
One notable passion project that emerged from this exploration was the creation of a workshop centered around healing the inner child. Drawing upon principles of laughter, creativity, and mindfulness, this workshop provides a nurturing space for individuals to reconnect with their inner joy, express themselves through art, and find peace through movement. The transformative impact of this workshop on participants has been incredibly rewarding to witness.
Furthermore, at Noble Alkhemy, I craft a range of herbal products aimed at enhancing health and wellness naturally. Among these offerings is my own elderberry syrup, renowned for its immune-boosting properties. I also offer workshops on fire cider and Tea Alkhemy, where I share the art of using organic herbs and plants to create nourishing tonics and teas that promote holistic well-being.
Through these products and workshops, I aim to empower individuals to take control of their health and explore the transformative potential of herbal remedies and natural wellness practices. Witnessing the positive impact these offerings have on individuals and families as they embark on their journey towards optimal well-being is incredibly fulfilling.
In essence, my journey from the hospital setting to community-focused wellness work has been one of growth, learning, and fulfillment. This path has not only enriched my personal practice but also allowed me to develop innovative and impactful workshops that promote healing and holistic well-being. I’m excited to continue sharing these practices with others and supporting them on their paths to inner peace and wholeness, empowering them to live healthier, more fulfilling lives.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One significant pivot in my journey occurred when I transitioned from working in hospital settings as a Patient Care Navigator to focusing on prevention and holistic wellness. While I deeply valued my role in guiding patients through the complexities of the healthcare system, I felt a calling to address health from a more proactive standpoint.
This transition involved pursuing further education, including earning a Master’s in Health Education. It was a challenging yet rewarding shift, as I delved into areas like health promotion, community outreach, and preventative care. Along the way, I encountered moments of uncertainty and had to navigate unfamiliar territory, but I remained steadfast in my commitment to holistic wellness.
This pivot required courage, resilience, and a willingness to embrace change. It wasn’t always easy, but it ultimately led me to a path that aligns more closely with my values and passions. Through Noble Alkhemy, I’ve been able to combine my expertise in health education with my love for yoga and holistic wellness practices, making a more meaningful difference in the lives of others.
This experience taught me the importance of staying open to new opportunities and being willing to adapt and evolve. It reinforced the idea that pivoting isn’t about giving up, but rather about finding new paths that better align with our true purpose and values.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
When it comes to managing a team and keeping morale high, I’ve learned that support is absolutely essential. It’s all about fostering a positive and encouraging work environment where every team member feels valued, heard, and appreciated. Here are a few tips I’ve picked up along the way:
1. Open Communication: Building trust starts with open communication. Make sure your team members feel comfortable expressing their ideas, concerns, and feedback. Whether it’s through regular team meetings, one-on-one check-ins, or anonymous suggestion boxes, creating avenues for dialogue is crucial.
2. Recognition and Appreciation: Never underestimate the power of recognition. Taking the time to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work and contributions of your team members can do wonders for morale. Whether it’s a heartfelt thank you, a written note of appreciation, or a small token of gratitude, showing your team that their efforts are valued goes a long way.
3. Empowerment and Trust: Trust is the foundation of a strong team. Empower your team members by delegating tasks and responsibilities and trusting them to handle them effectively. Provide opportunities for growth and development, and encourage them to take ownership of their work. When you trust your team, they’ll rise to the occasion.
4. Supportive Leadership: As a leader, it’s important to be supportive, approachable, and understanding. Be there to listen to your team members’ concerns, offer guidance, and provide assistance when needed. Lead by example and demonstrate a positive attitude and work ethic. Your team will look to you for inspiration and guidance, so it’s important to set the tone with your actions.
By prioritizing support, communication, recognition, and empowerment, you can create a positive team culture and maintain high morale within your team. When your team feels supported and valued, they’ll be motivated to do their best work and achieve success together.
