Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dee Crawford. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dee, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
My social media is still small but growing everyday. I manage it myself and create all the content. What I love most about my social media is its organic growth and relatability. I show up on my stories because I love connecting and interacting with my customers! It builds trust from your customers to know who exactly is making the product they are spending their hard earned money on. I try to show behind the scenes, my social life, my family life and work life all the same. To me, being wholesome and honest with your followers is the best. I try not to participate in a lot of “this for that” type posts where you are asked to follow me to try to win something from another account. I try to let referrals and word of mouth increase my numbers! And I try to not take myself so seriously. We’re all just out here having fun!
Dee, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started Do Me a Favor just before I had my first child, in 2014. I was only making ceramic coasters at the time and once my family grew, the chemicals and time involved in making those simply did not fit my lifestyle anymore. Fast forward to 2020 when the country was on lock down, I craved a creative outlet and comfy clothes were all the rage! I bought sublimation equipment and taught myself the trade. The design possibilities are endless which is addicting and so satisfying. I have grown my company to offer sublimated apparel and favors, making everything in my basement. I still work full-time during the day in finance so it’s the best of both worlds to work my corporate brain during the day and use my creative side at night. I am most proud of juggling it all while still knowing my limit. It’s hard to say no to a lot of great opportunities but for now, this is still a large hobby for me. Someday maybe I will be doing it full time, but for now it’s FUN and that’s what matters most to me. I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t fun.
How did you build your audience on social media?
One of my biggest wins or WOW moments on social media was when I tagged my favorite influencer, Loverly Grey, in a post. She saw it, loved the shirt and asked for one. I didn’t know she was going to share it on her platform and when she did I sold more shirts in two days than I ever have. The was a huge jump in confidence, followers, engagement and so on for me. My advice for social media is never to feel ‘too small’. Reach out to someone if you love their style and content. Ask them for advice, offer to send them a gift, you never know who will respond and feel the same about what you’re putting out there. The worst that can happen is that they can say NO or never respond so why not go for it!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
While Instagram really annoys me sometimes, it’s crazy how helpful it is to businesses. It’s so easy to like/comment/share and the more that happens the more people see your product. I try to not ask people to comment for engagement but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!
