Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dee Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dee, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
One of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken was leaving my home state, Mississippi, with no place to live in Atlanta. I planned to move to ATL since 2012 when I heard music artists were performing out here. So 6 years later, I took that leap of faith. I was homeless for 1 year and 3-5 months and experienced a lot of ups and downs in the process. From sleeping in my truck to couches and back to my truck, it was a real struggle. I took that risk because I have a weird belief in myself. I was said if I am going to do something I truly love, I am going to go “all in”. Once I graduated college as an Electrical Engineer in 2017, it was time to “go for it”.
Dee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Other than music and acting, I started as a photographer. I never planned on being a cameraman for other people. I bought my first camera for myself. I wanted to film my own music videos because everyone else charged too much. One day, a friend of mine asked if I could take pictures for a mutual friend and once I go the money that day, I was addicted. I never liked working a job and waiting for paychecks so the “fast money” was relieving. Currently I other my services for creatives and entrepreneurs mostly. My requests usually are promotional videos for businesses and headshots for actors. I am happy when a client is happy with the final product. It’s as simple as that. Plus, if they are satisfied, they refer me and possibly see my music as well.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I am currently thinking about taking a step back from acting. I love to act and it’s been a blessing, but it isn’t my passion. I wouldn’t be surprised it that changed for the better though. The entertainment industry is a funny situation. A lot of it is based on “luck”. I love my music and music visuals more and that’s based on some luck too. So my pivot needs to help me fund my own work. I’m going to invest into real estate and get to acting whenever I can. I still act but in 2022 I was more full time. This year my photography business is more important to me.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My Youtube has 19.4 thousand subscribers. I learned there is a formula to gaining Youtube fans. My advice is to make “shorts” which is no different from an Instagram story on Youtube. For some reason, if you post 1-2 shorts a day, you’ll see a BIG jump in subscribers in 30-60 days. Then focus on making videos relevant to your shorts.
