We were lucky to catch up with Dee Bomb recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dee thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
One of my early risk that honestly I consider a highlight in my career was the time after releasing my debut album. It’s 2014, there was a packed out venue for my album release party, the numbers were pretty decent, and I ended up with three local award nominations so I felt it was time to start working on the second album. Out of nowhere the local label parted ways with me and the distribution company we signed up with to put out that album was bought out by a different company.
All the money I made off the first album, I put it all into the second album budget including money I was making from my job at the time. I eventually signed to a distribution deal with my label. Once that happened, I convinced myself that the only way the album was going to be successful was if I toured outside of Minnesota so I put a mini-tour together in 2016.
In the end of it, the tour was successful enough for me to perform throughout parts of the country regularly. My second album was successful becoming my second best selling album in my career. Most importantly, I’m still here and I’m about to put out my fifth studio album called, “Long Game Energy”.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is Dee Bomb, I’m from Minneapolis, MN. I’m an award winning regional hip hop artist, a wedding DJ with countless 5 star reviews, a record producer, and I’m an entrepreneur, mainly operating an entertainment company, “Bangin Noize Entertainment” that release music and produce multi-genre music events & tours throughout the Midwest.
I always wanted to make music for the rest of my life and I spent my teenage years learning the music business because the plan was to earn money & respect as an emcee while owning everything I do or wear at the same time. At 18 years old, I got into the Twin Cities Hip Hop Scene with my first mixtape called “Bomb Threat” (Out of Stock) which got me my first local award nomination in 2007 and I kept growing from there.
I feel there will be problems in any successful career. I had problems as a knucklehead when I was young that could’ve cost me my life and/or freedom so problems in business aren’t huge obstacles in my experience long as you’re great at communication & math for the most part. Yeah, you do have avoid lawsuits, bad contracts, janky promoters, and haters that have intentions to harm you but elements like that are going to come your way when you are protecting and building your name in my experience. As for what I’m most proud of, I’d say dropping my debut album. That was always my biggest dream and I got to do it but that album got me where I am today so I’m very proud of it.
As for my fans and clients, I just want to create good music to impress the world with and hope it affects them in a positive way. Honestly what makes me a stand out is that I do what I want without joining some trend or hoping on bandwagons. I do what I want and get what I want because you have one life to live so I live it to max. If I can’t get it then I’m satisfied to say I went hard to get it or get where I need to be. I want the fans to know that when you come to a show of mine, I’m going to give you my best and a true live experience at my concerts.
As for cooperate, venue, or wedding clients, I’m going to give you the same expectations I have for my company when it’s time to present. It is for your entertainment but my name is on the line and I’m going to maintain being known to give my best and make it something they won’t forget. You’re not rocking with a person you’re hiring or booking, you’re rocking with Dee Bomb and the name speaks for itself. I’m humble because I do believe in growth but I also know what I bring to the table and I want everyone that’s involved in what I do to win and be satisfied.
If you ever streamed/purchased my music, I appreciate you just as much as I appreciate those that come to the shows.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I would have to say they’re separate because the mission has always been to create good music earning respect as a dope emcee but the goal was to work full time in entertainment, being my own boss for everything if not most that my name is connected to.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
When you take away the rewards and the money, all you have is the feedback. Seeing the fire emojis in the comments of my music videos, the messages I get in my DM about how they like my albums, people telling me how certain songs helped them while going through trying times. All that is what’s rewarding and important, we’re just musicians that want to be loved so to get that love after putting out your private thoughts, opinions, and vision of art for the whole world to see and hear is a feeling hard to describe but it’s a feeling we all desire for the most part.
