Dedra, appreciate you joining us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?

In July 2020, I experienced a severe illness that caused me to be hospitalized for 7 months. Upon release from the hospital, I have been unable to walk and using a wheelchair for mobility.

Though I currently use a wheelchair, and am adjusting to my new norm, my passion still lies with small business owners, and that means, helping small business owners manage the business side of the business while they focus on the passion side of the business.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

After completing my Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Tuskegee University and my MBA from Brenau University, I spent over 25 years working in Education. During my time working in Education, I fed my passion by working with new startup entrepreneurs during my off time. I helped them properly structure their businesses, properly account for their income and expenses and make strategic decisions for the future of their company.

For many years I felt the calling to fully devote my time and talents to the underserved community of small businesses that need professional Accounting services at a price point that was manageable for their small business needs. I decided to focus on providing Real Solutions for Real People. I stepped out on faith and launched The Moon Group LLC in April 2019. I decided to bet on me and my “gamble” has been an amazing journey.

I am known as the Auntie Accountant because I have dedicated my business to provide hand held service to help my clients understand their business financials and provide discipline when needed if they get a little off track.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

The pandemic surprised us all and as the world reeled with how to manage the new norm, I was blindsided by a life threatening illness that left me in a hospital bed with a very uncertain future.

While fighting for my life in the hospital for 7 months, I never asked Why Me, instead, I fought for my life and knew that the current test would become a test of resilience and rising from the ashes.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?

Social media is a big part of our culture now and my top tips are:

Genuine Authenticity : Be the truest version of yourself possible. Smoke and mirrors do not build a sustainable brand but the authentic you can.

Brand Awareness : Be Authentic and consistent in your messenging. Establish yourself as a SME, Subject Matter Expert, by sharing your knowledge through content that is consistent, relevant and relatable.

Remain Teachable : Forever be a student of your craft and gain new skills from others. Don’t be afraid to look at training in another industry that you can incorporate into your own. There’s a vast range of expertise that you can draw from.
