Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to DeCue King. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
DeCue , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
Here’s a polished version of your answer, tailored for a magazine editorial:
My first opportunity came from Dino Spencer at the legendary 5th Street Gym in South Beach, famously known as the place where Muhammad Ali used to train. As a new personal trainer, it can be tough to land a position at a high level gym without much experience. But Dino took a chance on me. He saw my willingness to learn, even if I didn’t yet have a deep resume. That opportunity changed everything. He taught me so much about boxing and fitness, lessons that still guide my career today. I’ll always be grateful for that start. I came in with an open mind, ready to absorb knowledge like a sponge. and that mindset helped shape who I am as a coach now.

DeCue , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve built a small fitness company that specializes in helping both individuals and fitness businesses reach their highest potential. My core offerings include private one on one personal training, boxing instruction, and strength and conditioning programs. I also provide hands on assisted stretching to support recovery and mobility, and I specialize in athletic development for youth athletes focusing on speed, agility, power, and overall performance.
Beyond training, my company also operates in the consulting space. I’ve had the opportunity to own, manage, and help build two boutique gyms in South Florida, both of which are still thriving today. I work with gym owners and fitness entrepreneurs on everything from facility design and equipment selection to program development and staff training. My mission is not only to transform clients physically, but also to contribute to the growth and quality of the fitness industry.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In January 2021, my life changed in an instant.
I was riding my motorcycle in the left lane on a Miami road cruising, focused, in control. Up ahead was one of those notorious bridges where once you’re on, there’s no turning back. A driver in the far right lane realized too late that her turn was coming up just before the bridge. In a panic, she made a sharp cut across multiple lanes straight into mine. I had no time to react. She stopped suddenly, either seeing me in her rearview mirror or catching a glimpse out of the corner of her eye. I hit her back door full speed.
The impact was violent. I blacked out, had a seizure, and woke up in the hospital with a head injury, small fractures in my ankle, and severe dizziness that made it hard to even stand. I couldn’t train. I couldn’t work. For weeks, I felt like a shadow of myself.
It wasn’t just physical it was emotional. I felt like a superhero who’d lost his powers.
But slowly, through rest, reflection, and a strong push from a good friend, I made my way back into the gym. The first sessions were humbling. I was weak, dizzy, and completely out of rhythm. But I kept showing up. I rebuilt myself, one rep at a time. And eventually, I felt those powers come back not just physically, but mentally. That was my moment of triumph.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Without a doubt, yes. I’d choose this path all over again. I’m a people person at heart, and this profession has given me the chance to connect with so many individuals from different cultures, backgrounds, and walks of life.
It also gave me the opportunity to build my own business to create something on my own terms. I love the freedom that comes with it: the ability to travel when I want, to make my own schedule, and not have to answer to a traditional boss. But what really sets this career apart is the relationships. Over time, clients don’t just stay clients, they become friends, even family. They’ll text me on birthdays and holidays. It’s not like a typical 9 to 5 job. It’s a community, and being part of that makes it all worth it.
