Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Decara Holman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Decara , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
I live by the motto FAMILY IS THE FORMULA. And if I ever try to steer away from this, God continues to remind me everyday. While I do know that I was born to be an entrepreneur – everything about the way my mind works is surrounded on the idea of business, the WHY and WHY NOT of the reason I am motivated and determined to push through with this gift, is because of my family. When I started my online juicebar 4 years ago, it was not only to serve the community but also to serve my family. Health and wellness had become a strong passion for me and family has always been my main purpose. In my efforts to keep us healthy during a pandemic, sparked the dedication to help others do just the same. As the juicebar started to become more successful, I started to notice my entire family just step in without even being directed. My husband has always been supportive so there was no doubt that he would help wherever and whenever needed, but seeing my children at such a young age want to help – and not just help with the easy or fun things – help with it all: label bottles, pack, ship, take orders to the carrier, it opened my eyes to what is truly had become. A family business. Since, we have launched other businesses and the structure still remains of all hands on deck – WILLINGLY. Family businesses have become our ministry and I am firm in my advocacy for family businesses. We are always better together.
Decara , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Four years ago after having my third child, I was blindsided and traumatized with postpartum preeclampsia, anxiety, and depression. It was new territory for me because I had two other babies prior with no issues and my entire pregnancy this time was perfect. It was scary and anxiety made it hard to function while my body was trying to recover. Being placed on medicine I never heard of and worrying if it would be permanent or not, sparked my interest in natural health and one of the many things I became more intrigued about was juicing. One of the greatest revelations I received was sometimes we experience things that show up on the outside because we need a reset on the inside. I then became more and more interested and through my own experiences, I dedicated myself to finding recipes for different health ailments. Through that I realized that God used my circumstances to create a vision. I remember sitting at my kitchen counter asking my husband “Bae what if we start a juicebar for people and educate them on how it can help their circumstances. He replied let’s do it! As always. From there Pressed Fresh ATL was birthed. It’s been four years and the road has not been easy. It’s still not easy. In business I’ve experienced many struggles, especially after the pandemic, with inventory issues, high volume, low output, financial losses, just to name a few. One thing I have yet to do is quit. I’m always in front of finding solutions and improving as a business DAILY. This doesn’t mean it’s easy, but it means I’m dedicated for the long run.
The best thing about my brand is that I continue to find a way to serve everyone. Being in good health is a universal goal, but there is no one universal way to get there. I offer many products that can help anyone just start their health goals. And my goals is to continue to add more. From weightloss specific herbal detoxes, to apple cider vinegar gummies, to juice cleanses – the goal is to offer something for everyone and be a leading health and wellness business in the industry. The biggest thing that sets me apart from other brands is first the quality and taste. My customers said it. Unlike some of the juices on your favorite grocery store shelves, we do not add any water to our juices. Just fresh fruits and vegetables and the blends are formulated for taste AND purpose. Whether you need energy, immunity boost, more nutrients, or to detox our blends are formulated specifically for that. Also we are a small business who does not compromise quality for the sake of a dollar. We are in business for the community.
I am most proud of our ability to overcome in this industry. We are already four years in the making and every time I get discouraged or overwhelmed I am reminded to look at our growth and know that Rome wasn’t built overnight. We will continue to persevere as long as we stay focused. I am proud of the brand we built, and even prouder to know that we are continuing to build each and everyday.
I am thankful for all of my customers. They keep us going and to potential customers I just want them to know if they trust us with their health journey, they will not regret it.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients have been my loyal customers. Customers want to know what they are buying works and it’s worth the money especially in the health and wellness industry. This is why I strive to always put out the best products and quality because it makes people want to share your brand with others and turn into loyal customers.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When I first started my business, I worked a full-time remote corporate job. I believed in my products so much that I was willing to send them to people just to try them out. Our world’s favorite auntie Tabitha Brown was one of those people. And that forever changed my business. We got into a partnership and she was able to help us spread awareness all over the world and get those customers that we know we were created to serve. Celebrity influencer partnerships can be a blessing for small businesses because your brand exposure is beyond your reach. But first you have to have a good product. Because that’s the only way you retain your customers.
