We recently connected with Deby Kelley and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Deby, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was 17, I found out that I was related to Patsy Cline. I sang as a little girl putting records on and just singing all day every day some musicals just anything. I just love to sing, but when I found out that I was related to Patsy Cline is when I kind of really got more seriously Involved in singing.. I went into the community and started joining different singing groups just to be able to sing. In 2007 I resigned from my job after being signed with AMI records in Nashville. I went out on tour for two years I loved it so much I felt that I was in my element no pain no worries it was just a peaceful bubble that I put myself in when I’m up on a stage.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
When I was given the opportunity to be signed with a record label I thought all was going to be super fantastic. Great. Being an independent artist is such a struggle, but singing is my passion so I do all I can to be able to sing for any opportunity that may come up. Not always being signed by a label he’s gonna get you to be a famous person. I do not consider myself any better than anybody else and by no means in my a famous person I just love to sing and be an independent artist not many radio stations will play your music unless you have a major label backing. I have been signed by two labels and neither one actually benefited me enough to wear. I feel I should be where I should be after doing this since 2007. I have had a very exciting time performing. I am now working on music videos which one has just been excepted and nominated for the Culver city film festival in Los Angeles. being an independent artist with no backing it’s hard to get things out there. I have a great management team and some awesome songwriters. One to mention is Roy August a multi platinum songwriter that wrote the song fancy free for the Oak Ridge boys that took them to the number one hit. I am so honored to be able to be a part of a co writer with Roy I feel so blessed. You need good songwriters you need good songs. You need to have the feeling the passion and this strive To make it in this industry..
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The way that people can support the independent artist is take a listen to our music maybe call your local radio station and request our songs again we as independent artist don’t get the same airtime as the majors. Your local independent artist make pennies compared to what the majors made, but they are really really good. Independent artist out there that can perform just as well as some of the majors and most of Of them, don’t even get a chance to be heard other than working their fingers to the bone singing their voices out in local bars in communities so please come out and support the independent artist at any local bar any local community event
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
My most rewarding part of my singing is being able to be on stage performing and watching the response from people whether they’re enjoying what I’m doing or just having a smile on their face that makes them happy. When I sing, it puts me in a peaceful world, I enjoy performing in front of people And hope that people enjoy my performance.
