We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Debra Gibson-Welch. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Debra below.
Debra, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I wish I started my business sooner because it takes years to build a reputation and scale as a business. It depends on the type of business, and how you started and scaled. It takes years to establish a credible reputation, and build a strong customer base that will stay and grow with you.
Debra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I a problem solver. There are many pain points for a business today in terms of reaching its ideal customers. My role with Deeg Consulting is to help my clients reach potential and current customers in the fastest and easiest sales channel available. There are many ways and channels to reach people, and some businesses are stretching their budgets to the limit which results in small returns on their investments. My role is to help them plan and focus on the best marketing channels for them and their clients. For example, it’s essential that everyone has a website as their base and then we can build from there. We start with a basic cake and then we add the icing, the sprinkles, and more until it is completed. A website is a basic cake, we must start there.
I started my business about 8 years ago after being laid off several times during the retail industry downturn. Social media was an area I was interested in and I was one of the early bloggers on the web way before it became what it was today. The technology was limited but I loved it. My love for blogging eventually evolved when WordPress arrived on the scene with their early designs and I decided I wanted to learn more about building websites. I studied and got a certification in Website Design and that is what I have been doing ever since! Everything has changed so much since then, from website development to SEO, to social media and email marketing, and so many choices for my clients.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Networking, and staying connected to your present and past clientele has proven to be the most effective strategy for me. Working with freelance agencies proved to be a frustrating exercise, it comes down to working hard and producing great work. Networking with business connections, past and present clients, and friends worked for me.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I like to maintain strong relationships with my clients and one way is to continue to be available if they need something related to my past work. I also like to make sure that I promote and refer people to my client’s business as well as help find new business for them. It helps provide engagement and continuity for my business and theirs.
