We were lucky to catch up with Debra Anne Clement recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Debra Anne thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
I would say there are two things that I do a bit differently.
First, while I believe we are here to exercise our free will, I believe the horoscope is much more than a general blueprint or a simple roadmap. I believe it’s the shortcut to the soul, and it’s far more specific than most people realize.
Besides revealing what the soul came here to do, the horoscope describes how the soul intends to do it, including gifts it brought forward, lessons it promised to learn, traits it agreed to assume, relationships it intended to develop, and conditions it planned to experience in order to accomplish its earthly purpose.
To ensure that its itinerary is carried out on schedule, the eclipses and transits, notably Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, activate the horoscope and trigger events that were predestined by the soul to nudge it forward along its intended path.
Of course, in the end it all comes down to free will. How one responds to such events, as well as one’s day-to-day decisions, ultimately determines to what extent the soul’s purpose is fulfilled during the lifetime. The good news is that even if one gets it completely wrong, the soul still learns and evolves from the experience.
The second area where I feel I distinguish myself is my approach to teaching astrology. From the get go, I teach my students how to synthesize the influences in the horoscope so they’re able to access meaningful insights from a chart after the very first class.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ll start by answering the most common question that people ask me is, which is “How did an attorney become an astrologer?” The truth of the matter is that it was the other way around. The astrologer became an attorney, and then the attorney eventually found her way back to astrology.
I’ve always been fascinated with the planets. As a child, I watched all of the space-themed television shows, but at 16, I read Linda Goodman’s “Sun Signs,” and my interest shifted from the astronomical to the astrological.
At that time, astrology education consisted of a handful of books in the “Occult” section that was usually hidden in the back of bookstores, so over the years I used astrology books to teach myself how to analyze natal charts and interpret transits.
As a single parent in my early 30’s, I practiced professionally to earn extra money, but I put it aside when I went to law school.
Years later, the 2008 market crash left me unemployed in law and overqualified for non-legal positions. Months of fruitless job searching and a dwindling bank account made me realize it was time to accept what my own horoscope had been telling me. My law career was essentially finished, and it was time to reinvent myself.
I may have been a single mother without any job prospects, but I wasn’t without any skills. Although I had stopped doing paid consultations, I had continued to read for friends and family, so I decided to make astrology my full-time profession.
To be honest, it wasn’t so much a choice as it was a necessity, because it was all I had at the time. In any event, I set my intention, built a website and asked the universe for guidance. A few weeks later, I received an email promoting an Internet radio show. Until that moment, I had no idea that such a thing even existed.
Despite my total ignorance about this new innovation and without ever listening to a single internet show of any kind, I dove right in and launched “Anchored in Astrology,” a weekly radio show that aired live to a worldwide audience.
For the next three years, I taught astrology in a way that was easily understood, demonstrated its practical benefits, interviewed notable astrologers and prominent spiritual leaders and gave no-prep readings to live callers.
The show was extremely popular, and by the time I decided to bring it to a close, I had gained an excellent reputation as a natal and predictive astrologer and had a thriving consultation practice with clients all over the globe.
As the saying goes, the rest is history. As the years passed, my practice grew organically through referrals, and I attracted high profile clients in the entertainment and business worlds. Private businesses hired me for events, and local astrology groups invited me to give lectures. I hosted a membership website (The Astrology Salon), shared my insights in online articles and print magazines, taught classes and workshops, launched a second podcast (“Shortcut to the Soul”) and created a formal mentoring program.
Although my practice is primarily focused on astrology, I am a medium since birth. From the time I was a young child until well into my 40’s, I had terrifying experiences with visitors from the other side. While I was comfortable being intuitive, I wanted nothing to do with the spirit world and spent most of my life denying the possibility that I was a medium, even though my own horoscope indicated it was part of my soul’s purpose in this lifetime.
Still, a part of me was drawn to it, and over the years I attended workshops with psychic-medium Lisa Williams but continued to resist it.
In April 2013, just as the lunar eclipse triggered my north node, a point of fate in the horoscope that describes something the soul came here to do, I began receiving messages from the other side for a friend. In the following months, I saw angels, heard voices and was awakened by spirits. It was time for my gifts to blossom, and it wasn’t frightening.
Just as I was finally at ease with the spirit world, my mother unexpectedly made her transition. Blocked by my grief, the spirit world turned completely silent. When my sadness lifted, so did the veil, and this time I surrendered to it.
Unsure of my direction, I decided to turn it over to the universe. If I was meant to walk a new path, then I had to trust that Spirit would lead the way.
The very next day, a new astrology client asked me if I could connect with her deceased father. In all my years of practice, I never had such a request. I knew this had to be happening for a reason, so instead of saying “No, I don’t do that type of work” I said, “Let’s see.” Then I took a deep breath, invited her father in and shared everything he gave me.
When it was over, my client knew her father’s spirit was watching over her, and I knew I was a medium.
It was time to make this a part of my life’s work, so I enrolled in a private one-to-one mentorship program with world-renowned psychic-medium Lisa Williams. Soon afterwards, I enrolled in her formal training program, sat for testing and earned her certification as a psychic medium.
What type of Problems Do You Solve for Clients?
Clients come to me for a variety of reasons. Many come simply because they want to gain a greater understanding of themselves, as well as learn how to make the most of their birth energies and upcoming planetary influences.
Others come because they feel lost, stuck, invisible, blocked or unaccepted while others are in the midst of a crisis or a transition. They want to make sense of it all, and they want to know when things are going to get better.
Whatever the concern, I never tell clients what to do or attempt to solve their problems for them.
Instead, I empower them to do so by providing chart-based insights that come straight from their souls, including the lesson that needs to be learned and the role it plays in their spiritual development. Once they understand why it’s happening, clients become eager to work through it and master the lesson.
To help them do so, I offer additional chart-based guidance, as well as a comprehensive forecast with precise time frames, detailed insights and practical advice to help them use the upcoming planetary influences to the greatest advantage.
What do you feel sets you apart?
I truly care about my clients and my students, and they know they can trust me to listen without judgment, keep their confidences and provide them with the highest level of guidance.
What are you most proud of?
On a personal level, I’m proud of my resilience and ability to succeed when the odds are stacked against me, but I am most proud of my daughter. She had a very rough start in life and never let it keep her down. I like to think she gets that from me.
Professionally, I am very proud to be one of the astrology Internet radio pioneers who paved the way for today’s astrology podcasts, and I’m also proud of my mentoring program and the success of my students.
Current Services and Offerings
I offer private astrology consultations and psychic-medium readings, as well as online astrology classes and intuitive development workshops.
In February 2023, I will be offering an online astrology event that will includes a series of workshops on a variety of interpretative topics, as well as how make the most of this year’s significant planetary events.
I also offer professional astrology training through my “Pass the Torch Astrology Mentoring Program,” a comprehensive hands-on program that offers an unparalleled amount of personal attention both in and out of the virtual classroom. I not only teach my students how to give exceptional astrology readings, but I also teach them how to create a successful professional practice and offer an optional certification option that offers the opportunity to be promoted on my website and taken under my wing.
I announce all new offerings, classes, trainings and events to my newsletter list first, so my subscribers get first dibs on them.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Following my divorce, I unexpectedly found myself embroiled in a custody battle that ultimately spanned 7 years and cost over $100K. From the moment it started, my daily life was characterized by the relentless stress of court appearances, attorney bills and the inability to keep a steady job. Despite having parents who welcomed us into their home and provided emotional and financial support, I dropped a significant amount of weight, lost quite a bit of hair, became reacquainted with acne and spent sleepless nights in fear of what would happen if justice didn’t prevail.
Two years in, I scored a major victory that restored a sense of stability, if not yet calm, to my life. While I knew I still had a long road ahead of me, I knew this wasn’t a time to rest. It was a time to rebound and show my daughter that no matter what happens, you can always rebuild your life.
Inspired by my own legal nightmare, I decided I wanted to help others. I made the decision to go to law school, but first I needed to graduate college.
A few months later it was summer, and with credit for a year of previous study from my associate degree earned many years ago (secretarial studies), loans from the government and childcare courtesy of my mother, I was in college. After attending year-round classes in the evenings and on Saturdays for two years, I graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in Literature and American History.
Although the wheels of justice turned slowly and the bills continued to mount, as I continued to overcome the odds I became confident that no matter what life threw my way, I would be able to handle it.
At 40 years old, I graduated law school with honors from a 2.5 year accelerated program and passed the bar 2 months later.
By that time, I had stopped looking over my shoulder and was focused on the bright future I would create for my daughter and me.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn scarcity thinking.
When it came to money, my family’s view was that it was finite. Growing up, I routinely heard that “half a loaf is better than none,” which promoted the belief that it’s better to settle for less than have nothing at all.
For many years, I was the living embodiment of that proverb, and as one might expect, a life of settling for less did not promote a positive attitude or a life of abundance.
In what turned out to be a life-changing moment, my brother gave me a copy of “You Can Heal Your Life” by Louise L. Hay and told me it could turn my life around. Although I was skeptical, he had never steered me wrong, so I agreed to read it. I found it inspiring, and as I practiced its philosophy, my life began to change.
I began to explore similar teachings by other spiritual leaders, which also helped me shift my mindset and my energy. While I made strides through self-study, I wanted to accelerate my progress, so I enrolled in an intensive one-week Heal Your Life® Teacher training certification program.
The training turned out to be a truly transformative experience. It didn’t happen overnight, but I successfully overcame my limiting beliefs connected to money, as well as my willingness to settle for less than I wanted or felt I deserved.
