We recently connected with Deborah Young and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Deborah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you’re open to it, can you talk to us about the best (or worst) investment you’ve made. What’s the backstory and the relevant context behind why you made the investment
One of the best investments I made was in my health. I have decided this year to take blogging breaks, where sometimes I will not post every week. Sometimes I will post about one blog post a week instead of two. It’s good to take care of your mental health and relax and take a break.
Deborah , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
First and foremost, I am honored to be featured on CanvasRebal. Thank you for this opportunity. When I was in high school, I was introduced to the world of blogging. I was aware of blogging but never blogged myself. With my first blog, I wrote short sweet blog posts that ranged from topics of fashion, holidays, and food. After high school, I stopped blogging and took my time studying in college. During the 2020 Pandemic, I decided to start blogging again. At that time, I was not aware of the new blogging world as it had been a few years since I blogged. I quickly connected with the blogging world and grew. I am so thankful for the blogging community guiding me, supporting me, and the kindness I have received.
Here is a little bit of why blog is called Headphonesthoughts.com
When I first was starting to create my blog, I had a few different name ideas. I new that at the end of the day my blog was like a daily journal. It was a way for me to express myself. I had not really talked about myself to people before. Most people who met me in person have told me that they don’t know what are my interests. I am like a hidden book. I started to blog to talk about what I like and what I don’t like. I wanted to write about my thoughts and feelings about life. When I was writing down blog names I came up with a few but it just did not match me and who I am. Anyone who knows me, knows I love listening to music. Once I new I could listen to the same song a million times and not bother anyone with headphones, I new I needed to have pair. I personal don’t like to blast my music. When I put my headphones on I feel like sometimes I have thousands of different thoughts coming to mind. I had heard other people say that when they are listening to music through their headphones their minds can wander and you can ponder and dwell on many things. I knew at that moment I had to call my blog Headphonesthoughts.
One of my most proud moments is when I saw my blog getting views, shares, and comments without me having to post on social media. I am constantly working on SEO for my blog and it’s great to see my blog growing. I know with me learning on my own SEO and implanting it into my blog has helped me get traffic.
In addition getting to read my readers comments, I am so thankful for all the people I see sharing my blog post. I am thankful for all of the support and love I have.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
When I was in school, I remember having a math teacher say constantly, “Your first intuition is never right.” Yes, I know she was referring to solving math equations. However, I remember taking this lesson with me everywhere I went. I look back at it now and I think to myself sometimes my first intuition was correct. It took a few years to unlearn this. I did make many mistakes because of this but I think to myself with every thing anyone goes through in life there is a lesson to learn. Always keep your mind opened and keep learning something new.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When I first started blogging, I did not use social media I just used SEO. Yes, SEO is great but I did need to connect with fellow bloggers and reach a different audience. I did my own independent study and learned on my own how to market using social media. Over the last two years, I have grown online and learned how to connect with many bloggers all over the world and I made many connections online. My advice is to be friendly but also be cautious. Check your grammar as much as possible, I have made many mistakes. Don’t tweet, post, or say anything indirectly and negativity about people online. Be aware of people trying to use you online. Be friendly online and keep making connections online.
