We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Deborah Dominguez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Deborah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I chose to be an artist to open the mind, to deeply comprehend and embrace others. To love them and defend their causes, as if these were my own. Becoming an artist has not only required resistance, resilience, an open heart, trust and patience, but a deep understanding of what a fulfilling journey of love, passion and unique beauty feels in the skin.
This path has not only taught me to empathize with other hearts or to acknowledge so many wonders life has to offer but it has also proven how impactful it can be towards a so needed change. My most meaningful goal behind an untiring perseverance has always been helping the voiceless to be heard and seen, serving so the communities for growth and I firmly believe and daily fight for having more courage, more artists, more art to make it a better place. I trust more will choose it, with clear certainty: Art will make us all better human beings,
The projects that have taught me the most and I believe have been of greater impact are: ‘LA FORTUNA,’ directed by Oscar Winner Alejandro Amenabar, ‘IN CONNECTION’, presented at CANNES SHORT FILM CORNER, ‘THE EBONY FRAME’, Ovation nominated, ‘ARE YOU APP?’ & ‘LAS BECICLETAS’.
My most meaningful personal projects are born from and towards a vulnerable approach for change, existence, nature awareness, living connections and lots of love: ‘WO&MEN,’ ‘V-O-U-S,’ ‘ÂMES JUMELLES,’ ‘GAIA,’ & ‘MOTHERHOOD BREATH.’ Last, but absolutely not least, all community collaborations towards the awakening of artistic awareness worldwide have definitely been my on-going motor.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I deeply believe that my essence as an artist is born from my desire to make a change in this world. When I choose a character, I picture them before a huge civilization, in their most vulnerable and truthful moment. I close my eyes and imagine what they can change, what their existence means for the world, how they are unique. I observe how many lives, bodies, and minds this person could impact, with healing and growth as a goal — daring to be themselves and to speak up. I consider what their overall impact would be. Sometimes, as societies become unbearable, facing certain realities from a different life, name and perspective, from different eyes, just results in an easier and more effective path.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In the same way that engineers, doctors, and scientists are highly respected and celebrated, I yearn for ART and ARTISTS to receive similar acknowledgment. Just as the world recognizes the importance of these professions for the well-being of society, I hope for ART to be equally seen. ART represents a quiet yet powerful force for societal improvement, an often overlooked therapy for mental health and trauma healing, and a catalyst for expanding minds. It has the transformative ability to change our perspectives, open our hearts, and foster a profound understanding of our neighbors. ART creates a shared humanity, born from a common ground. Placing us all on the same precipice, ART compels us, silently, to direct our fleeting attention to meaningful work. In essence, ART elevates our collective race towards betterment.
