We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Deborah Curtis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Deborah below.
Deborah , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I opted to end a 40-year career and re-focus my time. but my road to a new opportunity is one that I never wanted to take. Grief takes shape in many forms, wanted and needed to focus on keeping my son’s memory alive while helping others. Before starting a non-profit 501(c)(3) foundation, like starting anything new, there were so many things to determine and decide. By reaching out and talking with individuals impacted by mental health struggles, survivors of suicide, physicians, counselors, large and small foundations and many others, I worked to get the answers to important questions. Where are the gaps and challenges for those with mental health challenges? How might a small upstart foundation help? What is actually needed to start a non-profit? After determining a name, how do I tell people about 4TeamBrock? Having ridden a bicycle 70 miles a grand total of twice during my 62-year lifetime was hardly the preparation for averaging 70+ miles per day for a 3,100 mile solo, unsupported bicycle ride from San Diego to NYC. But, Brock was adventurous, it gained attention, and physical activity is great for mental health. If I were to start over would I do anything differently? Of course, in hindsight, I’d make a couple of adjustments. But you do the best you have with the information and resources you have at the moment and move forward. I know our mission has helped others, I’ve always been proud of Brock and am proud of 4TeamBrock! Health is Health. Remember Brocky Loves You.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I enjoyed my 40-year career working in a variety of leadership roles in both the hospitality industry as well as in hospitality and international education. Throughout, my focus has centered on coaching and development of individuals and organizations to reach their potential. A great reputation is something that takes years to earn, I’m most proud of the impact I ‘ve been able to contribute.
After my youngest child died from his mental illness, I realized that although I could no longer help Brock, through Brock, we could help others. So, we started the Tallman Curtis Family Foundation, Inc., better known as 4TeamBrock. Our mission is to support those with mental illness to lead long, full healthier lives.
