We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Débora Tácylla. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Débora below.
Débora, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
A lot of being an actor comes from being a human and sharing emotions we all have in common, but during different stages and phases of life. However, that is not enough and training is essential. For example, when we learn to speak, what use would it be if we knew every single word of a language but had no idea of how to structure a phrase? The same thing is with acting. I learned a lot through watching people around me being humans, through watching actors perform in various projects in various languages and most of the time, repeating it. I have spent hours and hours in front of the mirror, or pretending that my house was a movie set or my couch a ‘Saturday Night Live’ couch and let my mind wander in a sea of possibilities. But I have also spent hours in acting classes, learning how to improvise, how to listen (acting is reacting), voice tone as well as body language. Having ideas is great but creating opportunities is essential and in order to create an opportunity, there is a lot of planning and dedication involved, which can take some time and feel hard in the beginning but it is so worth it as life continues on and on.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Débora Tácylla and I am a Brazilian actress mostly known for my stage credits. I got into the entertainment industry in my early-teen years as I was fascinated by its aesthetic including red carpets, interviews and even fan edits on Twitter. Through that aesthetic I decided to start learning more and more about the facts and the details that are not as glamorous but definitely important and my passion grew. For my first ever play – in which I am forever grateful for everyone involved from my parents to the director and my cast mates and the wonderful audience we had – I only had a few lines on a forty-minute long play and now I am happy and proud to announce that I will play the female lead on an acclaimed Brazilian play that has a run time to two hours! It feels surreal but I am so grateful and so blessed to have this opportunity, it is something I prayed, dedicated time and study for and to see it happening is very rewarding.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to tell stories of strong and powerful women to inspire strong and powerful women. I remember as a child, that everytime I would watch a movie, cartoon or TV Show there was always one character that was “me”. And then I would get together with my friends and each one of us would have our favorite that we said were us. For a practical example, the famous Mexican soap opera ‘Rebelde’ has three female leads: Mia, Roberta and Lupita. I was Roberta and one of my best friends was Mia and the other Lupita, and this is something that each one of us chose on our own, seeing these characters and seeing in them a potential to be similar. Roberta was strong, fearless, independent and impactful and this is how I wanted to be. But Roberta was played by the talented Dulce María who has the same positive characteristics as her character. I want to be this bridge between what girls and women never thought they could be, to be the best version of themselves. If they look at a character I play and think something simple such as ‘I like that nail polish color, I want to try it’ or even ‘I like the way she parted her hair, I might wear mine like that tomorrow’ it already has a serving impact and that is my mission. For as long as I am serving people, I have a purpose and a reason to continue.
How did you build your audience on social media?
For me, social media can be an extensible part of our social life and it can be important. This is how I am able to maintain contact with my loved ones that live further from me. I like to believe that my audience is composed of people who thought ‘I see you and I want to see you grow’ and that is why they hit the follow button and interact with posts. My goal was never to accomplish a specific number of followers but rather building a relationship of some sort. There are people who nowadays consider Instagram, mostly, as the new LinkedIn as well as there is an undeniable pressure to be a content creator and an influencer – which are valid jobs, careers and take a lot of effort, dedication and consistency – which can be hard to deal with. But my biggest advice would be: have fun with it and have it your way – but remember, be careful.
