We recently connected with Debora Medici Guetta and have shared our conversation below.
Debora, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I have infused a significant part of my personal story into the work I have created, particularly in my recent projects “Out of the Shadow” and “Landed”. These pieces have allowed me to conceptualize the valuable lessons I have learned throughout my life and felt compelled to share with the world with the goal to inspire.
As a woman, I have always strived to support for family and the community at large forgetting to support myself while doing so. Women often prioritize their families, society, and business, which can hinder their personal growth if not properly balanced. Through my journey, from Out of the Shadow to Landed, I have found a way to express my commitment to being my truest self and to becoming the best version of myself while managing all the different aspects of my life.
With that in mind, after several years refining my technique and honing my perspective, I revealed a series
of photographs titled, “Out of the Shadow”, a haunting body of images that
reflected my desire to shed the trappings of the past and position myself as an artist
and a woman in front of the world. I then continued my journey and “Landed” in another world with a
series of collages that capture the frantic and freeing energy of the world’s great urban centers.
Debuting in Spring 2015, “Landed” introduced a new technique to manipulate photographic prints in unique ways. By cutting and hand-weaving together separate
images of the same metropolitan scene, I crafted a heightened sense of space and
movement. Revealing in both the chaos and peace of these manipulated moments, “Landed” gives me the opportunity
to assert myself as a vital witness to the madness and beauty of contemporary life.
In 2021, I presented a collection of new works that
apply my distinctive cut-and-weave technique to large photographic prints of natural subjects,
reconstructing otherwise ordinary portraits of flora into monumental abstractions of color and
light.
I aim to be more than just the glue that holds my family, friendships, women’s causes and community together; I aspire to create an environment where I can fully embrace my identity and continue to grow personally and professionally.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Motherhood, married life, and being part of a community can significantly impact a woman’s well-being. The responsibilities of taking care of others can often overshadow your own needs and sense of self. In my journey, I found myself setting aside my artistic pursuits to prioritize and support my growing family. However, through this experience, I came to the realization that I had neglected my own identity. It was a moment of awakening, recognizing that I needed to step out from the shadows of the life I had created and reclaim my own place and priorities.I reconnected with my creative side and process when I joined a photography group which I am still a part of today. I was able to express myself in a way that I had never conceptualized before. I knew that I had a natural instinct to put my thoughts, feelings, and emotions into an art platform, but I did not know that it would be as natural as it was when I joined this community of photographers 13 years ago. The feeling that I felt when I first joined was a sense of homecoming. I was able to finally be vulnerable with what I was feeling in my life in an artistic manner. There is no judgement, which is a great foundation for exponential growth.
Not only do I enjoy the process of creating my art, but the reactions that I get when people see the final products have a huge impact on me as well. My primary goal and mission in my creative journey is to inspire individuals to embrace their own lives. I firmly believe that everyone possesses a unique potential that should be shared with the world, as it has the power to educate, foster personal growth, and promote healing. By tapping into our inherent abilities, we can strive towards becoming our best selves, not only for our own benefit but also for the betterment of society as a whole.
It is vital to not only care for those around us but also to invest in our own lives. Throughout my personal journey, I have gradually understood the importance of delving into my own creative experiences as a means of self-discovery and self-definition.
By exploring my own creativity and nurturing my artistic endeavors, I have discovered that I am able to reach my highest potential and become the best version of myself. This, in turn, allows me to bring greater value and impact to the lives of those around me. By investing in ourselves and our creative pursuits, we can cultivate a deeper understanding of our own identities and unleash our full potential.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
To best support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem, society should first recognize the value and importance of art and creativity in all its forms. This involves acknowledging artists as professionals and understanding the significance of their contributions to cultural, social, and economic development. Society can also actively engage in promoting and showcasing artistic works and events. Supporting local galleries, exhibitions, performances, and festivals helps artists gain visibility and connect with wider audiences. It would be beneficial for schools and institutions to prioritize art programs, workshops, and mentorship opportunities to nurture the talents of aspiring artists from an early age and giving them access to artistic materials, spaces, and tools in order to empower artists to pursue their creative endeavors.
I believe that networking among artists and creatives can foster a supportive and collaborative environment. Platforms, events, and communities that facilitate connections, idea sharing, and collaborations can lead to the exchange of knowledge, inspiration, and opportunities.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I believe that one of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist is when you are able to show your work whether to an individual or to an audience and ultimately to inspire. The act of showing your works allows your to connect with others on a profound level. It creates a dialogue between the viewer and yourself, where your art becomes a catalyst for conversation, introspection, and emotional connection. Moreover, displaying your art in a public setting provides a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment. Personally, it is a tangible manifestation of my creative journey and serves as a testament to my growth as an artist. Sharing my work with others allows me to contribute to the larger cultural fabric, leaving a lasting impression and potentially inspiring others to explore their own creative passions.
It serves as a reminder that art is meant to be shared, and the process of creating is only complete when it is experienced by an audience. The anticipation and excitement leading up to a show, coupled with the gratification of witnessing the impact it has on viewers, ignites a sense of purpose and encourages me to continually evolve as an artist.Overall, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative lies in the ability to express oneself authentically, create an impact, experience personal fulfillment, connect with others, and create works that resonate with future generations.
