Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to DEBEA$$I. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
DEBEA$$I, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Applied knowledge is always the best teacher.. Ive always one to seek the knowledge, weather it was traveling for a conference or to present my music, it always boils down to “doing.” Also i learned a lot by being a understudy and a student of game, by just being a fan of “hiphop.” Still having the passion and love for the culture. Knowing what I know now, I would most definitely have explored my artistry earlier on in my career. However things will balance out I feel more equipped now than before. The skills that were most essential that Ive picked up along this journey involves networking. In doing Ive learned a lot, but what Ive learned is that its not what you know, but who you know. The second thing would be eating the humble pie. Being a fly on the wall and soaking up information when in those rooms.
In lot of cases I may be self taught, so not knowing who to seek council or advise always presents a challenge. No matter how many books, seminars, practice, or rehearsals you still have to apply it. A lot of times these challenges are solved with my network. Which goes back to those essential skills. Network equals net worth.
DEBEA$$I, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I go by DEBEA$$I I am hiphop recording artist from Virginia, most recently signed to Mr. Bawsaw Music & Media Group.
Got involved with music back in the early 2010s really focusing on the behind the scenes and business aspect of the industry. Started my company Flamethrwz Music Group as a promotional tool to help independent artist. Since then we grown into include a publishing company. It wasn’t until recently I started to explore my artistry, recording and showcasing my music. It was 2019 I would release my first single on all streaming platforms. My music? Southern, hiphop at its core. I wouldn’t consider it as “trap” but it does pose those elements. Some have said my music give you the feel of a Project Pat, Three 6 Mafia, MJG, classic southern sound with substance and Virginia grit. That would coincide with my influences being the Outkast, UGKs, Cash Money Records, No Limit Records of the world. Personally I would describe my music as that ride around the corner and set off car alarms. Seriously I dedicate just as much as heart and soul into the production and creation of the work itself as I do into the writing of the song. I want to give you a listening experience. I would say the thing that I am most proud of is being blessed to do what I love to do and to do it at this level.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The music, entertainment industry as a whole. I remember the days when there was no streaming. The beginning and what it has become. Things are different, from the way you market, promote, advertise. Social media. having to unlearn this app using it for my pleasure but instead as advertising tool away to promote my brand and business, myself as a artist. There were the days of burning cds standing in front of where it may be to peddle my music, those days are long gone. Im kinda still unlearning and learning more along the way. There are still some basic principle grass roots things that I go by.
But the marketing and promotions is something that I find myself currently unlearning.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Its gotta be the feeling of people enjoying my music. Still feels surreal when I unexpectedly hear someone playing a song. To hear someone rapping my lyrics, to see someone dancing to my music. That brings a smile to my face. The art is for the people, when it can resonate with another individual solidifies why I create the music. It keeps me going. That’s gotta be the most rewarding aspect.
