We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Debbie Wolff a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Debbie, thanks for joining us today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
My first job in the fitness field was a far cry from my physical fitness as a child. I was watching TV one afternoon (The Mike Douglas Show)while living in NYC (1980) when this powerhouse Jacki Sorensen came on demonstrating Aerobic Dancing! It looked like so much fun and had great music so when the screen flashed a local studio number I immediately called and started taking classes. I had no idea what so was doing but I loved it. I was hooked ! Unfortunately, it was more money than i could afford so when they asked if anyone wanted to become an instructor I raised my hand!! After following the strict protocol for weight/height requirements(scary thought nowadays) and running a 1..35 mile “fun run” ( it was not) I was admitted to my first training. The rest as they say is history! Since then I have attained many group fitness certificates, yoga, Pilates , Spinning , Tae Bo and more. I am an NSCA CPT personal trainer. I now train private and group classes live and virtually.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am most proud of being in a field that is so helpful to do many and that I have been through many incarnations in the field. In a field in which many younger professionals are coming up I can say I have been doing this for 40+ years and won’t stop anytime soon. During early days weeks and months of the pandemic, I had to quickly adapt to livestream classes and I feel they are here to stay. Learning to change is key to success !
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Absolutely. This is the best profession. We help others get and stay fit. We stay fit at the same time, We are in the business of helping others physical and emotionally which is a bonus!
Have you ever had to pivot?
The last 2 years has been an eye opening experience. We had to shift from gym/studio in person classes to home livestream classes. It didn’t take long to figure out how that would take shape. It also forced me personally , to look at how much time I wasted on unnecessary things. I am grateful for the opportunity to stay connected with my group and private clients .
