We recently connected with Debbie Lee De Jesus and have shared our conversation below.
Debbie Lee , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Music has always been a part of my life and the key to who I am as a person; however, I was always intimidated of writing my own music for fear of what public opinion would be. One night I decided that I was going to give it a shot, and I wrote and recorded a song about what I was going through. My first performance of it was a complete disaster but I performed it a few times more and it was life changing. From that moment on I wrote other songs that resonated with listeners, and it has been wonderful. It’s about being able to convey a message through my music and knowing that I gave the ability for someone relate to it, letting them know that someone has been in their shoes and knows what they are feeling. This has been the biggest risk, being able to be vulnerable with the public with my music.
Debbie Lee , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Hudson County, New Jersey native, of Puerto Rican and Cuban decent. I have always been a person that has known what she wanted to do in life. I attended Roosevelt School in Union City from K-8th; I attended the former Union Hill High School, and I hold a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from New Jersey City University. I am a lover of the arts, photography, painting, music etc. I remember when I was in the first and fourth grade, both Mrs. Newman and Mrs. Parisi gave me the confident to excel in life. I remember have a project to do about what I wanted to be when I grew up. My selections where Model, Singer and Lawyer. I didn’t become a lawyer, but I am a successful paralegal, and I did become the singer- songwriter, two out of the three is not bad a ratio. In April 2010, I had found employment in a law firm after years of training, I became a paralegal. In March of 2023, I decided to write music and my artistic name at the time was Dee Lee, now I go by DDLee.
In 2021 through most of 2023, I was going through a really dark period in my life, the only thing that really got me through it was music. I had always sing to karaoke music or had done covers of popular songs, but I had been insecure of my own material. My biggest fear was writing songs, putting it out in the world and being judged for it. I wrote my first song which I never release (not sure if I ever will) but it was the song that opened the pathway to where I am now music two and half years later, I am supremely proud of it. My songs are the expression my thought and deepest feelings. Every song I write is a layer to who I am, what I am thinking and feeling. Music has always been in my blood since I was probably in my mother’s womb.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to connect with my listener and knowing that my music served a purpose in their life whatever that maybe. When I am DDLee I am free to be someone else.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal in this journey as an artist is to create a positive impact and connection with my audience.
