We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Debbie Kamp. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Debbie below.
Debbie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
@Photography was born while I was working as an account’s assistant for a real estate brokerage. One of my responsibilities was to pay vendor bills, and in that process, I discovered how much money the broker was paying the real estate photographer. At that time, I was enjoying photography as a hobby, but became interested in doing more with it. I approached the broker with a proposal to take over shooting real estate for him, and he agreed! I had a feeling that this was going to be a worthwhile endeavor because there were so many potential clients in the office who would often follow the lead of the broker.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As an avid photography enthusiast throughout high school and college, I went on to be accepted into the Disney Advanced Internship program after graduation as a Photopass Photographer. This newly developed branch of the Walt Disney Company offered many once in a lifetime opportunities for an intern to take advantage of. I was part of multiple opening teams at several parks, participated at test locations and photo shoots, and took classes to further strengthen my photography skills.
After leaving The Walt Disney Company to pursue other career opportunities, I continued my hobby of photography in the theme parks, nature, pet photography, macro photography, and more!
It wasn’t until working for a realtor that I spearheaded an effort to take over the real estate photography for the brokerage. I was faced with the challenge of perfecting high quality HDR photography, and I did not give up until I was satisfied with the end result. I continue to learn and perfect my methods to this day!
Now, I not only work with real estate agents to photograph their listings, but I also work with interior designers who need photos for their portfolios or personal use, and vacation rental owners who want to help their potential guests envision themselves vacationing in their home.
My photography style sets me apart from most other real estate photographers because I utilize HDR photography, which means I take several photos and combine them into one as opposed to using flash photography. This technique results in a more natural look, and shows the viewer many details that cannot be seen when using other photography methods. I would consider myself a perfectionist, so I am very critical of every photo I touch. After hours in front of a computer screen, I sometimes wonder if it is worth it? Hearing positive feedback from my clients makes up my mind every time – perfection is key!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I receive the most new business via referrals from former and current clients. In the age of social media, I feel very lucky to have so many clients saying great things about me and my business, that I don’t feel as much pressure to create content for a social media account that may not even bring in more business!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Like many other professionals, I was laid off in 2020 at the start of the pandemic. At first, I wasn’t sure what my next venture would be – it’s not everyday that you get a chance to completely start over! After a lot of self-reflection, I decided it made sense to ramp up my photography business. I started marketing myself through email campaigns, social media, and contacting people I knew who may have been in need of my service. It was a slow start, but I knew persistence would be key, and so far, it has paid off!
