We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Debbie Flood a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Debbie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Has Covid resulted in any major changes to your business model?
The music industry has seen dramatic changes due to covid. For over a year there were no live shows resulting in most musicians to rely on the government funding or get another source of income during that difficult time. I ended up working in IT so I was lucky to have that skill set . Many of my friends were finding new and creative ways to make money with online paid shows, online meet and greets, etc Since covid getting back to playing live has been amazing but with inflation the cost of touring has also been inflated making the profit margin difficult.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a professional drummer and provide drum lessons / session work/ tour support for artists needing a drummer. I play most styles of music and am very versatile in all facets of drumming. This upcoming year my goal is to grow my social media following and make more video content.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Moving to a musical city and networking has been what has provided me much more work with a diverse variety of clients (from country to alt rock etc). At first, I had to really spend a lot of time going out and meeting musicians and the key was to not give up and just keep on trying. Once I got work , the key was to always be prepared and work hard so that all my clients were happy. Word of mouth really has helped to grow my business. Also using social media and posting a lot has been beneficial!

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During covid it would have been easy to just throw in the towel but instead I started doing online live streams to gain new followers. I also worked to get interviews with online social groups to get my brand “DFloodDrums” to more people.
