We recently connected with Debbie Adams and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Debbie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I’m an Author and I only started being an Author about 3 years ago. I follow God and listen to Him and He had spoken to my heart about sharing my testimony of faith. He told me I needed to write a book and like a rebellious child I kept saying I can’t do that because I have no idea where to even start. God kept telling me for two weeks He wanted me to write a book and share my testimony and finally, I said “OK Lord, you want me to write a book, well you need to show me how since I’ve only read books and never written one.” He sure opened doors after that. I had an acquaintance in California, and she was having a retreat on the basics of writing a book and she had asked me to think about coming to her retreat. She had no idea that God had been speaking to me about writing a book. I signed up for her retreat and when she sent out the invites with the cost of the 3-day retreat, I said “Oh Lord, I can’t afford that.” I wasn’t even thinking that God had opened the door and was showing me how to write a book just like I had asked. God then spoke to me again and said, “I have already provided the money,” and I remembered that a few days earlier I had received a check from someone just out of the blue. I was thankful and I was holding it as my emergency fund and God was the one all along that had put plans in action so I could write a book as He had planned. So, there were a lot of firsts on the trip to California to go to the book writing retreat. I had never been on an airplane by myself and so I had to go through the airport and get on the plane by myself and then I had to get an Uber driver to drive me to my hotel. I had never stayed in a hotel by myself in a city and state that I had never been to before. God was definitely taking me out of my box. The retreat was a success, and I learned a lot and came home and in two months had written and published my first book. I was happy that I had listened to God and went to California to learn how to write a book and I could feel myself being more confident than ever before. It was all because God gave me the confidence and I had actually accomplished something totally out of my comfort zone. Thinking back on it now, I’m really proud of how far I have come with God’s help and with God guiding me each step of the way on this new Author journey.
Debbie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Debbie Adams and I’m a Southern gal that lives in Middle Tennessee and I have always loved to read books. I still remember in my childhood going to the local library every weekend to get a new book and get lost in the adventure that reading the book took me on. I’m a faithful believer in God and I believe even as a child that God was putting His plan for my life in action. I never expected that at my age, I would become an Author and it’s all because of God directing my life. God has called me to be a faith Author and to tell others and encourage others that no matter what is going on in your life that God will always be there for you. God has opened many doors on my journey of book writing, and He has always been there, and I write what God lays on my heart from the title to the subject and even each chapter. My life has had a lot of events that without God, my life probably would have turned out differently. All of my books have a part of my story in it, and I show how God showed up in each circumstance in my life. I’ve been cancer free for 16 years and that’s my biggest story on how God carried me through cancer and healed my body. I have been though a tornado sitting on top of my house and God’s hands moved it down the road. God has showed me that I have a testimony that needs to be shared and that’s why God called me to write faith books. God showed me that I have a voice that needs to be heard and growing up I was a shy quiet gal around people that I didn’t know. Now I am speaking on stages and doing podcasts speaking about my life story and my books. All my life I’ve loved helping others and now I am able to help others even more through my books. I write my books as if I’m talking to the person reading my book. I write my books to make them seem more personal and I do that so those that read my books know that they were written in love. That is love from God and love from me for them. I want those that read my books to know that someone cares for them and that I’ve prayed over each book I’ve written because only God knows who will read my books and He knows who needs to read my books. My books are meant to encourage and inspire others.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’m a faith author and my faith is in God and it is God that has carried me through a lot of life situations. We all go through things on our journey of life, and some go through more life challenges than others. There was a time when I seemed to go through a lot of life challenges for about 2 years. It seemed there was always something happening, and I began to wonder what was going to happen next. It started with cancer attacking my body, and then I lost my job after I finished my radiation treatments. During that time my husband decided to end our marriage. As you can see that was a lot for one person to handle and I wasn’t alone handling it, I had God on my side. Even though that was a very hard time in my life, I pushed through with strength and resolve that only God gave me. I found strength that I did not even know I had. I kept going and I stayed faithful to God and to myself and I went on with life. God has performed a lot of miracles in my life and helped me to see a lot of things during that time. I could have stayed depressed and felt sorry for myself but instead I put the smile back on my face and kept going and I tried my best to even help others. If you want to lift yourself up from life’s challenges that get you down, look at others around you and see what you can do to help them and, in the process, helping others will also help you. In the midst of all of the challenges I have faced and might face in the future, I stood strong not on my strength but on God’s strength because if it wasn’t for God holding me up, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It is because of all I have faced in my life, that I have a story to tell and it’s a story of encouragement and inspiration to keep fighting to keep pushing forward through whatever you’re facing in your life. No matter what life throws at you, God will always be there to help you. Looking back now on those years, I just smile knowing it was God that gave me the resolve and stamina to keep going.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The main goal or mission that drives me is to continue to follow God and listen to His voice leading me to write faith books. Being a Faith Author is a calling from God and I aim to do my best to my abilities to encourage others with my writings. Every book I write and every subject I ponder over I seek God’s wisdom, and it is God that gives me the words that need to be written in each book. It is God alone that knows who will read each book and who knows who needs encouragement from the words in my books. I write to share my story and testimony of faith and also to spread the news of the Gospel’s Good News. It brings me enjoyment and peace knowing that I am able to help others by encouraging and inspiring them through the words I write in my books and articles and also when I’m speaking on stage or on podcasts.
Anyone that knew me in my younger days knew I wasn’t much on carrying on a conversation with strangers or people I didn’t really know and now I believe God showed me that I had a voice. I believe God showed me that with my calling of writing faith books, I also need to be speaking about Him as well as my testimony to encourage and help others. So, another part of my goal or mission is to help as many people as possible. I’ve even had people come to me that know I write books and ask me questions on how to get started on writing a book and the basics of writing and I’ve had 1 person so far to actually write a book after asking me details. Even with working a full-time job aside from my writing and speaking, I’m always writing down ideas that pop in my head, so I won’t forget later on when I start to write.
My main goal or mission is to follow God’s leading in writing faith books. My next goal is to continue to write faith books as long as God directs me and to continue to write in such a way that encourages and inspires and helps others. I write my books in a format where it seems I’m talking to you face to face and I’ve had several people respond that they love that way of writing because it helps them to understand what they’re reading. Another goal is to always remember that whatever I am writing about, to be conscious of who might be reading my books so I may be able to help a larger group of people. My audience right now is probably older women, and I would like to maybe write something for a younger group. Whatever I write it will always be God leading and directing me in the direction I need to go.
