We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Deb Davies a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Deb, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
Her first daughter, Mia Belle, was stillborn at term from an umbilical cord accident in March of 2001. She had an uncomplicated low risk pregnancy that ended in a sad loss. Her second daughter, Lauryn, was born a year later. Both girls instill Deb’s work with an unparalleled degree of inspiration and passion that enable her to compassionately support other women through the childbirth process.
Deb, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Deb Davies is a Doctor of Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine, a birth doula, a childbirth educator, an author, a member of the Eastern School of Acupuncture and Traditional Medicine faculty, and a mother. Her first daughter, Mia Belle, was stillborn at term from an umbilical cord accident in March of 2001. Following this unimaginable loss, Deb sought healing through Chinese medicine. She continued to use this branch of integrative medicine to help her through her second pregnancy. Her daughter, Lauryn, was born a year later. Both girls instill Deb’s work with an unparalleled degree of inspiration and passion that enable her to compassionately support other women through the childbirth process, including support for miscarriage and recurring pregnancy losses.
The Ultimate Birth course I offer teaches couples how to prepare for a better birth. It presents problems they don’t know may arise in labor and birth and offers alternatives. So many people are trusting the current healthcare system and putting their power in the hands of the medical professionals, instead of standing in their own power throughout the labor and birth process. I educate them on how to become more in touch with their own bodies and confidently navigate the healthcare system so they will ideally feel elated with themselves, fall deeper in love with their partner, and have more energy for themselves, their new baby, and their new life.
The two things I am most proud of are my daughter, Lauryn, and the fact I have been able to dedicate my career to helping so many women. I was able to turn the worst loss of my life around to make a difference for so many others.
The focus of my message is the importance of childbirth education and how families can use this knowledge to prevent a lot of problems from happening, especially if they are giving birth in the hospital.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I’ve always been a people person and love connecting with others. In 2006 I began a group while a master’s student at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine called the Integrative Medical Discussion Group (IMDG). We’d invite Eastern and Western medical students and professionals to discuss various integrative topics. Topics of the IMDG included integrative women’s health, integrative sexuality, integrative pediatrics, and many more. I hosted this group for over ten years, and I met hundreds of medical professionals and students over the years that eventually became practitioners. I wound up getting lots of integrative medical referrals once I was in private practice from this group.
I’ve always gone above and beyond for people. I am a people pleaser and want to be of service. People remember me and the good feelings I shared with them.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
March 2020 was a massive pivot for my career. I’d signed onto a huge lease two years prior in my dream integrative medical office. Once the pandemic hit, I knew I had to end my lease as myself & my renters did not feel safe working and seeing patients. I wound up closing the facility and staying home for two months. I figured out how to transform my business into an online situation that was more comfortable with the world’s current climate. I did go back to practicing acupuncture briefly for a bit. Still, I realized my true passion is teaching about birth, and that is where I want to focus my career.
