We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Deatrice Snuggs-mccloud a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Deatrice , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I definitely wish that I had decided to pursue my career in the beauty industry right after I graduated high school. Unfortunately, I allowed people to talk me out it only to end up in cosmetology school 17 years later. Of course, I can’t help but think about where I would be now if I had started my journey then but nonetheless, I am extremely grateful that things happened the way that they did.
I think if I had started sooner, I would have been able to grasp the concept of things a little better at a younger age. As get older we don’t learn or comprehend things the way that we do when we are younger. However, don’t ever let that stop you. I was the oldest person in my class at 36 and I felt like the mother of the group. As a matter of fact, my classmates still call me, “Momma Dee” to this day and I love it!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I moved to North Carolina from Washington, DC in October 2007. When I lived in DC, I would typically go to a makeup counter at the mall when I wanted to have my makeup done for an event or special occasion. After relocating, I convinced myself that I was capable of doing my own makeup.
I enrolled in an 8-week makeup course in 2011 with the hopes of learning a few tips and tricks. After completing the course, I practice what I learned on anyone that was willing to sit for an hour for me to do their makeup. I volunteered my services for hair competitions, fashion shows and benefit events for several years until I decided to enroll in cosmetology school.
After completing cosmetology school in 2013, I felt more comfortable expanding my range of services to photo shoots and weddings. Since that time, I have grown tremendously as an artist and industry professional.
The majority of my clients are brides however, I have on occassion provided services for the deceased as well. I specialize in soft and natural makeup looks. I am known for catering to the, “I never wear makeup” client. I specialize in creating timeless and elegant looks. I am most proud of my professional growth over the years which has allowed me to mentor newer makeup artist and hair stylist. What sets me apart from others would be my amazing and diverse team. My team consist of 6 licensed professionals who can are extremely talented at both hair and makeup.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of what I do is being able to spend such an important day with my clients. When you think about it, your wedding day, especially for a bride, is one of the most dreamed about days of your life. To bring joy to such a special day is beyond rewarding. Not to mention the look on the face of a bride when she gets that first look of her hair and makeup and it all becomes so real for her. When their faces light up with happiness. That’s what I live for.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to be a mentor to new industry professionals that wish to focus on the wedding industry. I would love to share my knowledge and experiences with them. I want to share all of the things that I didn’t know and had to learn for myself. I’d love to share all of the things I wish someone had told me.
