Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Deanna Grandstaff. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Deanna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve ever worked on was when I had a piece of music commissioned for my 5th and 6th grade band students. It is incredibly rare for students at their age to have a piece written for them mostly due to finances. High School bands and collegiate bands have different funding opportunities that do not exist in elementary school band programs. I wrote grant applications and won a few of them to finance the project. I selected a composer from my state who was willing to come work with my students and conduct the worldwide premiere performance with them. It was incredible to see a piece go from ideas in my head, to a conversation with the composer, to seeing notes on a page, to finally hearing it played by my students.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Deanna Grandstaff and I am a 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade Band Teacher for the Canon-McMillan School District in southwestern Pennsylvania where I have taught since 2007. I remain a pivotal figure as the K-6 Music Department Head in the Canon-McMillan School District’s music program, embodying the values of passion, excellence, and continuous innovation in music education. My journey in music education began with a profound love for music cultivated from my upbringing in rural northeastern Pennsylvania.
I graduated with honors from Penn State University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education. This academic achievement laid the groundwork for my career, marked by a dedication to excellence and a passion for nurturing young musicians. Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Teaching and Learning at Point Park University, I continue to deepen my pedagogical knowledge and refine my teaching methodologies.
I have garnered acclaim for my innovative approach to music education, ensuring that all students have equal access regardless of physical limitations, cognitive disabilities, or socioeconomic status. I am committed to instilling a deep appreciation for music’s cultural and historical context among my students.
I have been honored with prestigious awards recognizing my outstanding contributions to music education, including the Country Music Association Foundation Music Teacher of Excellence Award in 2024. Additionally, I was named a GRAMMY Music Educator Award Quarterfinalist in 2022 and 2023, highlighting my national recognition for music teaching excellence. In 2022, I was also recognized as one of Pittsburgh Magazine’s “40 Under 40,” further affirming my influence and leadership in the greater Pittsburgh community.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a performing artist is the magic that occurs during live music. It is something that cannot ever be replicated. As a teacher of young children, I remind the audience that the music they are used to hearing at home has typically been heavily edited. Live music means anything can happen. Mistakes are embraced because that’s what reminds us that we are human beings.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Music is for everyone! Music cannot be something just for the wealthy or elite. It needs to be accessible by all children, regardless of socioeconomic status or ability. Every child has a place in my band. I will eliminate any financial barrier that might prevent my students from learning music. We are in the midst of an unprecedented mental health crisis amongst our youth. Music is something that can develop resiliency, collaboration, and enhance teamwork skills. It helps every child find their own voice and how that voice is important.
