Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Deanna Fitzpatrick. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Deanna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Prior to March 2005, I worked at a local credit card bank. I had been there for 18 years at the time that I left. I was leaving to take the biggest risk of my life. So much had changed in the past five years but now it was time to embark on even more change.
You see, in 2001 I went to see a hypnotherapist for help with weight loss. Although I didn’t get what I signed up for (no weight loss) I did experience a very unexpected change. I began to see people in Spirit form. I would be at work and see my friend’s Dad standing behind her. He had died when she was 13 years old. He began to give me information about himself and the family. She would then confirm it with her mom. Spirit began to show up around other people at work too and even when I went to friend’s scrap book parties. Sometimes I would see them in my home or my car.
Not understanding what had happened, I reached out to the hypnotherapist and she explained that I was “channeling”. I had no idea what that was and I began to research more. Over the next four years I began to dive into other practices. I learned Reiki and taught it. I learned massage but only practice briefly and I looked up and read everything about psychic ability and Mediumship I could get my hands on. Eventually I began to take classes in Mediumship and found out that I did have the ability to connect and communicate with those who have passed on.
I began to take a ton of classes. I am pretty sure I spent more money on my Mediumship education than I did on my college education. I am very thankful to all of the teachers I have had over the years that helped me to understand what had happened to me and to teach me how to practice this profession with confidence. I am thankful to the hypnotherapist too. Without her clearing the way this all would not have happened.
So in 2006, I started seeing people for readings in a little Victorian store in Middletown, Delaware. For over four years, I slowly developed a business with one on one readings at the Purple Sage. The owner at the time was so helpful to me and she became a cherished friend.
Business was not progressing quickly enough. My leaving the banking job to pursue a career as a Psychic Medium was a bit terrifying. I walked away from a stable income to maybe having one or two readings a month. In the first few years I ate through my entire 401k and half of my husband’s. I was contemplating finding a “real” job again but my husband Joe said to stick it out. He had seen evidence of the work with Spirit and also how things had changed. He supported me completely even when I was so scared and felt so guilty for causing a financial struggle.
And then a client contacted me and asked if I would do a group reading as a fundraiser that she was doing. I said I would give it a shot. The group was great and it was fun to work with more than one person at a time. Kind of a new challenge. So, I decided to start offering groups in people’s homes. ( I no longer do these). I did these for about 11 years and this helped my business grow. I no longer had to look for a “real” job.
I’ve now been practicing for over 16 years. I work with people in personal readings settings and I also work in various theatres in Delaware connecting for large audiences. I’m also thankful for the few years I spent taking calls on WDSD Iheart Radio.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a married mom of two adult daughters. I love camping, traveling and I make candles as a 2nd career.
But my work as a Medium brings me so much joy. I offer readings in person, via zoom or via phone. And I also offer large audience events.
Working as a Medium is always interesting. I’ve learned so much from my experiences with those in Spirit. And, it is my honor to be the conduit for them to those they still love here in the living. This work helps people have closure and it also helps them to know that the people they love, although no longer in the physical body, are still with them. Spirit will give evidence of their continued existence as well as how they see what we are doing here in our lives. We continue on . We just change form. It is also my honor to help people in the living with their grief.
I have to say that doing this work has also helped me to be a kinder person and have a better understanding of why people behave the way they do. Spirit has taught me so much.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I’ve spent so much of my life planning. But I have found that when I just let go and allow life’s current to take me things tend to work out better. Trusting our own internal intuition and following its lead. But to do this we have to both allow and trust. Not easy for someone who likes all their “ducks in a row” and prides themselves on that.
When I started to see Spirit and fought against leaving my job, things went down hill fast at work. It became clear that trying to swim upstream was having a detrimental effect. There are several experiences at work that occurred that were showing me that it was time to move on. And, when I didn’t listen, well, things got worse. So finally I followed my intuition and left my job.
It has helped since then, when I experience a stagnation, when things that I planned seem to be hitting a brick wall, I sit back. Allow myself to become patient and to just go with the flow instead of pushing against that brick wall.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
During the years of Covid, life was a constant pivot. It was for just about everyone. For me, I feel so fortunate. The readings can be done online or on phone. It’s all energy and Spirit seems to just know what to do. So probably half of my clients were willing to meet online. While others requested to be rescheduled. Of course all large events stopped as did working with people in their homes. So I was working a third of the time I had been working before and making much less income.
It was a scary time. But all any of us could do at the time was pivot again and again. So other than Mediumship I began to make candles. I had done this for fun over the past two years. It took me that long to make a decent soy candle. I learned so much online and I put some of my savings into ordering larger amounts of soy, jars, lids, and oils. I then went on facebook and offered the candles to be delivered to doors steps. People would either pay me online or leave money under their mat. My husband Joe and I would deliver candles right to their door. So, Dee-Lights Soy Candles was born. Making candles was relaxing for me, almost meditative. I loved making them and seeing how folks enjoyed them and the quality of the candle. It was so much fun. Truly though I had not ever imagined starting up a 2nd company.
So it’s become a family business. My husband Joe and Daughter Caitlin now help me with various vendor fairs and it’s fun to do this together. Although, I am sure my husband wished I had picked an item that wasn’t so heavy. Lately he said “Couldn’t you make Dream Catchers instead?”
Another indication of going with the flow. Sometimes we have a plan and then we need to release the plan just a bit and see what flows.
