We recently connected with DeAnn Thomas and have shared our conversation below.
DeAnn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share a customer success story with us?
As the owner of a non-profit organization (WISPS – Wasatch Investigative Society for Paranormal Studies) we love helping people feel safe in their own homes. People don’t feel that they are believed or know how to deal with a possible paranormal issue in their home.
One resident that invited us into her home had issues with a negative spirit harassing her grandchildren that she had custody of. The small boy (about 5 years old) was particularly being harrasssed by a negative entity in the home and he refused to sleep or play in his bedroom.
After we visited, accessed the situation, and dealt with it properly, I received a text. It said that the day after we were there, he went to his room and asked his grandmother “Where did he go?” The grandmother, not wanting to make a big deal about it, played dumb. The grandson shrugged and now sleeps and plays in his room as though nothing happened.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My brother and I started a non-profit paranormal team called WISPS. Wasatch Investigative Society for Paranormal Studies. It is a non-profit group which is invited into people’s homes to deal with possible paranormal activity. There is no charge for these services.
From there, we started the for profit company called Advance Paranormal Services for people who wanted to do a ghost hunt of their own and so that we could pay for things like websites, business cards, equipment, offsetting venue costs, etc. This is a company where we sell tickets and invite people to come to the venue we are investigating that night and hopefully have a paranormal experience, learn the proper and safe ways to investigate, and have a little fun.
We also started a podcast called “The Supernatural Hour”. We have over 200 episodes and have so much fun researching and recording these. It can be found on almost all podcast platforms.
Any advice for managing a team?
Accepting everyone as they are is very important. Everyone approaches things differently, but different aspects bring greater knowledge and information to the table.
Listening to the ideas and concerns of everyone and being very transparent with clear communications.
Having a yearly bbq to just hang out and be friends and road trips have been amazing!
We leave politics out of what we do, and tread carefully with religion. We deal with a very diverse political and religious group of people. As I believe most businesses do. The world of religion especially goes very hand in hand with most people as far as spirits, ghosts, and the paranormal is concerned. We have trained all our investigators to be honest, open. and accepting of not only each other, but the clients as well. When updating a client on what is believed to be going on in their home to be aware of the religious standings of the client so we can disseminate information to them in a way that makes the most sense. This also holds true for those on the team as we have a wide variety of religious and political ideals there as well.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
At one point, due to certain beliefs that I grew up with, I thought all paranormal activity was that of evil spirits. After doing investigations I realized that this is not true and have been fascinated by the new theories and information that I have learned.
