We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DeAngelo Ervin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
DeAngelo, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Yes I wish I would have started sooner in my music career because I’ve always had a passion for music and growing up I’ve always had people giving me broken promises to go to a studio and start my music career but it didn’t happen. Then when I started my music career I was going through a rough time in my marriage to the point I was getting a divorce. I was working security and doing PCA jobs as well. If it wasn’t for my brotha “Will King” I probably wouldn’t have started my music career the way that I did. He was the only one who was willing to record music with me and show me how to do certain things when it comes to recording and mixing my sound.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is N3RD4KING (Nerd The King) I’m originally from Chicago, Illinois but I grew up in East Saint Paul, Minnesota from the age of 13 to my current adult living now. I started freestyling at a very young age because at the time my mom was with a guy that was also a artist. I started writing music at 12 years old and started recording my own music at 25 years old. As I kept making music I also wanted to do radio, so I started my own podcast radio show called ARMAGEDDON RADIO to give artists like myself a chance to get their music played and heard. When I first started my music career I was recording off my cell phone, a Bluetooth speaker and the SoundCloud app, as time progress bought myself a laptop and studio microphone and got to business. As time progress, my friend “Eric Foss” taught me how to book my own shows, so I started booking my own shows for the past few years now. I’ve been making flyers for a long time as well so that just came naturally. I’ve worked with so many different artists around the Twin Cities and other locations like Wisconsin, Arizona, even with artists in Russia. I’ve performed for names like “Open-Minded” and “R.A The Rugged Man” and Carnage The Executioner just to name a few. I am proud of my accomplishments because people doubted me, gave me broken promises, and didn’t believe in me but I believed in myself enough for me to do what I’m doing today. I just want the people to know that I’m your average homeboy. I love video games, I love anime, I love hip hop, but most importantly I love pro wrestling. I do what I do for my family because without them I wouldn’t have hope to do what I’m doing now.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Support. Support is one of the most important things the artists need in order to grow. A simple LIKE, SHARE, FOLLOW, AND SUBSCRIBE goes a long way.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
People listening to my music, or people watching me perform my music and enjoying it. When I see and hear people talk about my music, I feel like I did something right
