We recently connected with Deane Gonzalez and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Deane, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My last project, Quince Candles, was filmed in my hometown of Fresno. We used primarily local actors, hired local crew, and filmed in locations I had known all my life. It’s a story of my mother’s and my family was a huge help with putting the film together. I don’t know that I’ll ever have an opportunity like that again, so it was very special.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into film when a director friend of mine asked me to write treatments for his music videos. Then he let me co-direct. Then I was compelled to direct narrative works of my own. Now I’ve written/directed many short films/documentaries, commercials, and music videos of my own. I think the sense of honesty in the work I do sets it apart. Even though it’s all imagination it comes from the most genuine place.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
That making art is for some and not for others. Growing up blue collar I think you’re taught if it ain’t earning you money it’s not worth your time. I think everyone has the need to express themselves creatively and will be happier for it.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Show up. Give.
