We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Deana-Kay Thomas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Deana-Kay below.
Alright, Deana-Kay thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
My hero is my mother. She is the strongest woman I knew, not just because of what she’s done, but because of what she’s endured. Despite being diagnosed with a serious illness that made her pregnancy extremely high-risk, and being told that she would not be able to conceive, she never gave up hope. Doctors doubted her chances, but her faith in God never wavered. She held onto her belief that if it was meant to be, God would make a way. And He did. Against all odds, she carried me, fought through pain and fear, and brought me into this world. Her unwavering determination, sacrifice, and deep faith paved the way for my life. I am here because she chose courage over fear, faith over doubt, and love above all else. She is not only my mother, but also my inspiration, my protector, and the greatest example of strength and resilience I have ever known.
From my mother’s journey, I learned the true meaning of faith, strength, and unconditional love. Watching her face impossible odds with courage taught me that challenges don’t define us how we respond to them does. Her ability to hold onto hope when everything seemed hopeless showed me the power of believing in something greater than yourself. I learned that real strength isn’t always loud or seen by everyone; sometimes, it’s quiet, steady, and full of grace. She taught me that love means sacrifice, and that determination, rooted in faith, can move mountains. Because of her, I understand the importance of resilience, the beauty of perseverance, and the value of never giving up—even when the odds are against you. Her life has shaped my values, strengthened my own faith, and inspired me to face life’s difficulties with the same bravery and belief.
My mother was a fighter , strong and resilient in the face of life’s challenges. She had a joyful spirit, a loving heart, and her presence brought warmth to everyone around her. Her love for God , Her strength, positivity, and deep love have greatly influenced who I am today.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, I’m Deana-Kay, and I believe writing isn’t just a talent—it’s a calling. It’s how I express truth, healing, and purpose. I am the author of Behind the Perfect Picture, a heartfelt and empowering book that encourages people to look beyond appearances and speak openly about the stories, struggles, and imperfections that lie behind the image of “perfection.”
My work is rooted in authenticity and emotional connection. Through my writing, I aim to create a safe space for readers to reflect, relate, and find the courage to embrace their full selves flaws, scars, and all. I help people see that there’s power in vulnerability, and that healing begins when we stop hiding behind polished images and start sharing our real stories.
What sets me apart is my deep passion for storytelling that uplifts, transforms, and encourages self-awareness. I don’t just write to entertain I write to inspire change and emotional freedom.
I’m most proud of the impact my words have had on others whether it’s helping someone feel seen, motivating someone to speak their truth, or encouraging silent battles to be faced with faith and strength.
If you’re looking for authenticity, depth, and encouragement in your journey, I invite you to walk with me through the pages of my work. My brand is about truth, healing, and celebrating the beauty found in imperfection

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One of the most defining parts of my journey has been overcoming low self-esteem. As a young woman, I deeply struggled with how I saw myself. I didn’t like the way I looked and often questioned why God had made me the way He did. My insecurities were only magnified in high school, where I faced constant mocking, bullying, and ridicule—especially because of my eyes. It was painful, and for a long time, I let those voices shape how I saw my worth.
But over time, something shifted. I began to turn the pain into purpose. I chose not to let the cruelty of others define me. Instead, I used their words as fuel to build resilience, self-love, and faith. I started to see myself through a different lens one shaped by God’s truth, not people’s opinions. What once made me feel broken eventually became the foundation of my strength.
That chapter of my life taught me that resilience isn’t about never being hurt it’s about choosing to rise, even when you’ve been torn down. Today, I stand stronger because of what I’ve been through, and I use my voice and my story to help others do the same.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
One thing I believe non-creatives often struggle to understand is how deeply personal and emotionally taxing the creative journey can be. For many of us, especially writers like myself, creativity isn’t just a talent—it’s a calling. It comes from a place of vulnerability, reflection, and truth-telling.
As the author of Behind the Perfect Picture, I don’t just write words—I pour my heart into every sentence. I relive memories, confront pain, and speak truths I once felt too ashamed or afraid to share. That emotional labor isn’t always visible, and it’s often misunderstood. People may assume it’s just about inspiration or talent, but in reality, it takes courage, discipline, and a willingness to be raw and real.
Non-creatives might also struggle to grasp how lonely the process can be. Creating something meaningful often means going against the grain, hearing “no” more than “yes,” and pushing forward even when you’re filled with doubt. Yet, we keep going because our work has purpose, and we know that someone, somewhere, needs to hear what we have to say.
So if I could offer any insight, it would be this: creativity is not just about making things look or sound good it’s about giving voice to the unseen, healing through expression, and building bridges through honesty.
