Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dean Allman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dean, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Probably photographing and shooting video at the World Bodypainting Festival in Austria in 2019. I have never felt more welcomed as a creator. The artists worked for hours with their models, who were then showcased on stage for a few hours more, before they went on to wash off the beautiful artwork. Our job was to preserve their work. At the end of the festival I felt that I was a part of a wonderful, creative community.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have been full-time photography and videography since 2008. Along with capturing images and video I am skilled in the use of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom for image editing, and Adobe Premiere pro for video editing. A large sample of my work can be found on my website at www.deanallman.com.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I just want to do the best job I can on whatever project I am working on. In the end a creative work takes on a life of it’s own, and has an impact on people in ways that we can never imagine. I always love hearing how the work created this kind of impact with someone. It furthers my connection with humanity.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and practiced in the mental health field fo 20 years. When my mother died, my own need to grieve her loss meant I need to devote more time to myself, so I migrated to web development for a time as that was less emotionally draining than working in mental health. From there I started developing skills in image editing, and was able then to blend that with my lifelong interest in photography. My interest and skill development in video work came about as the tools for creating video became so readily available to us.
In many ways the people skills I developed in mental heath helped me immensely when working in these other areas. When I started in my career we simply did not have all of this wonderful technology available to us. I got to develop a good sense for how to work with people, and as technology evolved my interests drove me to learn more technical skills. It has worked well for me in my career.
