We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful De shawn Montel Fowler. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with De shawn Montel below.
Alright, De shawn Montel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Sometimes I wish I put more energy into pursuing my talents but I also don’t regret the timing of which things are starting to fall into place. Everything has its own timing and the form of expression/execution I use today instead of the past is something I’m blessed to have achieved. I was like say my work has been more impactful in more recent times than it’s ever been before.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is De Shawn Montel Fowler Aka Mr. Fowler and I am a multi disciplined artist that focuses on creating work to invoke feeling through music, dance, and visual art.
I studied dance for 25 years taking numerous classes from ballet, contemporary, modern, jazz, and eventually hip hop which stuck the most and with that I went on to dance for the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Scream Team!
I am one of 1/3 of a house music group here in Cleveland called Smooth talk and we are pioneering a new wave of authentic house music here from the 216 with our own production and also created a traveling music show that is providing sounds of authentic houses music all night called welcome home.
I am most proud of the moments when I see how my work I created connects with the audience that is viewing it giving them an experience that is only felt not heard through music.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Best thing to do is keep supporting your local talent. It is very tough for these artist to put themselves out there to others and show people their your work so support for them goes a lot farther than people can ever realize. Another thing that can help the eco system is artist supporting artist. If we come together, creative intentional work together, and promote each other, this community will be bigger than it’s ever been.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My only goal is life is to help others learn how to express themselves fully as an artist. Every last one is an artist but we all aren’t in touch ourselves as that yet and that’s something we have to tap into to be able to express ourselves on the highest level. It’s such a beautiful thing when you realize what you create and see is something unique. This is something I wish everyone understood because each and every one of us is special and capable of being better and better every day.
The art of perception is something special as well. I used to have this phrase on my note in my room that i read it every day and it said “ no one actually knows you. Not your mom, your dad, your brothers, aunt/uncles, or friends, they all have perceptions of you and each perception is different. Only you know you, so why not believe in everything you do?”
