Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to DeCarso Carroll Sr.. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
DeCarso, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
When I first began my business and started receiving clients. I was still working on the name of the business. I would always ask my clients what type of details did they specifically want as far as their book illustrations, the background of their personal portraits, or even the comic book character they wanted to be for the comic portraits that I would draw for them. Almost every client told me that they would trust my artistic point of view. They trusted my process enough to allow me to add my own artistic touch. Which then became (De Carso’s) D.artistic touch.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is DeCarso. I work in the manufacturing industry and I am also a freelance illustrator. My business was started in March 2016 by a Facebook post of a drawing of Batman that I had done. Before that I hadn’t drawn anything in 15 years. But a longtime friend asked me to draw something for old time sake. From that post, the calls and clients started pouring in. Since then I’ve tried to supply my clients with the best art I can simply based on my skill set, my integrity to not share sensitive information about a project that hasn’t been released yet and my love of helping people achieve their artistic needs.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn was that I can’t do every project that comes along. Time management plays a major role in how I handle how many projects I take on at once. I had to learn that if I am illustrating a book for a client. I can’t take on any other clients because books require a lot more time than portraits. As much as I would like to do every project that comes my way I unfortunately have to let clients know that I can’t accommodate them at that particular time.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients has always been word of mouth. I am working on using social media more. But my best source has been previous clients being satisfied with my work and telling others about it. I take pride in making sure that my clients are happy throughout the entire process when they allow me to be their artist.
