We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful De-Ambra Burroughs. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with De-Ambra below.
De-Ambra, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
I definitely think being a Christian can lead to a lot of stereotypes and judgments.
When I first started analyzing the bible, it was around the same time I started to get into listening to podcasts. During this time, I was also taking a class called “Jesus” at my university. I was skeptical. It was my first time deep diving into my Christian walk. Life was lifing, and I thought if I needed to get anchored, why not try Jesus? Maybe even take a class. It was a 180 from the business and medicine classes I had taken up until that point but I knew I wanted something different. The course focused on the theology and historical importance of Jesus. The more time I spent comparing facts to faith, I realized there was a niche of individuals who didn’t realize how much of who they are, what they were going through and some of life’s common sayings can be connected back to the bible. Once I had that knowledge, I felt obligated to share it through a podcast. While all of this was fresh and new to me, I felt like it was something people needed to hear. People often mischaracterize Christians. There are Christians who still live J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar and even Maroon 5. Just because they like these things that are not verbatim in the bible doesn’t make them hypocrites. You see Jesus historically and theologically share the same name but the perspective, the lens add depth to the individual. He hung out with fugitives, prostitutes, murderers and liars. Despite this, it didn’t takeaway from the principals and values He lives by.
When I first presented the idea of doing a podcast, there was an individual who told me not to do it. “It’s over saturated.” I still remember that comment clear as day. Despite being oh so supportive, I recorded my first episode anyways. This podcast was intended to debunk the myth of a holier than thou Christian and introduce the Christian who listens to J Cole and enjoys a good Netflix binge.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is De-Ambra Burroughs and I’m a young 24 year old who just graduated college. I currently work as an analyst.
The Melanin Medley podcast got started back in 2019. I had a vision and idea that I wanted to do something in the creative space but I didn’t know how I was going to do it. I was starting to a deep dive in my faith and realized I was pretty good at analyzing the texts to make it more comprehensible for those who experience it be an incredibly dense book. I recorded my first episode a year prior to launching it. It centered around “A Dream Deferred,” encouragingly people to look inward and ouward on what was stopping them from pursuing their dreams and what God had to say about it. Believer or not I feel like anyone can walk away from the podcast with some wholesome commentary about how to have a better outlook on their lives. I put it down for a year to focus on my studies but after being discouraged by an individual who thought the podcast space was “saturated,” I took the leap and began recording, editing and publishing what everyone now knows to be season 1 of Melanin Medley. I strive to create a community where people can learn how to be better humans, Christian or not. I’m really excited to announce that in addition to Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming platforms, we also launched a YouTube channel. The goal is to use this platform for more tools and advice fot navigating one’s spiritual journey. I bring in different guests speakers to give their testimonies or perspectives on the episode or their spiritual journey. With the help of my partner and trusty ally Ralph Nelson, we work together in making this podcast the best it can be.
I’m most proud of this interview and being able to launch the YouTube channel. Ralph and I make a great team and I think the content we’re bringing to the MM Fam will be exciting and hopefully inspiring.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I watched a lot of RedefinedTV and ErinOnDemand on YouTube. She did an excellent job of explaining entrepreneurship, social media and tips to get started as a small YouTuber. I’m also inspired by the RedefinedTV ministry as well. They take the fluff out of understanding the word and get straight to the point.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
“Bringing the Bible to life for your everyday strife” is the mission for MM. Regardless of the post, interview, the episode, or video, every single facet is intended to equip individuals with wisdom, knowledge and tools found in the Bible. I learned that I had to get out of the way and just allow the spirit to lead the way. It’s in the imperfections and the scriptures that all encompass showing how the text isn’t just words on a page. They are blueprints to help us be our best selves.
