We recently connected with DaZM and have shared our conversation below.
DaZM, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Since I started DJing in 1995 things have certainly changed. Back then it was all vinyl, which proved a whole different level and certainly a steep learning curve for me! With no internet even back then, learning the craft was all about practice. I would spend hours in my small bedroom on my technics 1210’s.
At the time I was living with my parents and very much into hardhouse, which was very popular in the UK at the time. To this day I dont know how much parents put up with the constant bass pouring through their walls.
Having been on many dance floors and listening to house music daily I learnt quite quickly, how a house music tune is put together, so beat matching and phrasing came quite quickly to me. Beat matching of course was all by ear then, as there was no digital BPM reader in those days!
When I moved to North America I sold all my DJ equipment. Many years passed and I definitely skipped a lot of of the natural progression many may have had when stepping into the far more advanced DJ technology.
The passion was always there and I soon bought a very basic DJ controller which reintroduced me to the DJing, albeit now a very different approach.
The modern technology is vast and is ever changing. The possibilities with DJing now is endless and were seeing DJ’s blending 4 tracks seamlessly and simultaneously with such incredible creativity. The game is ever changing.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Being from the UK, the 90’s was an amazing time to enter the house music scene. I was first introduced to this music when my older brother would be blasting it out from his room. Seeing him start up DJing, it wasn’t long until the 13 year old me was hooked. I borrowed some money and bought some technics 1210 record decks, a mixer, a couple of records and spent hours daily in my room practising DJing. With no internet it was very much about listening to other house tracks and understanding how they were structured.
I spent many summers in Ibiza on the dancefloors listening to some of my all time favourite artists. Being a huge fan of this music we would often drive up and down the UK, club to club, as the scene was huge.
It was always a dream of mine to DJ from when it all started. Id have quite the imagination in my bedroom at 13, picturing crowds going wild to my music.
Other than a couple small parties in the UK I didnt perform at all. I was happy on the dancefloor and DJing in my room.
I moved to Canada and had a long break from music, as the transition certainly had its challenges. It was only around 7 years ago I purchased my first DJ controller, which as mentioned was a huge leap into the new DJing technology world. Armed with a love for the music the passion for DJing soon returned and I spent many years (and still do) practicing the art DJing.
Having never performed live in a club/bar I found myself deciding to join the world of social media and put myself out there and see if I could perform. Gigs started rolling in, locally in small bars. This really helped me gain the confidence to play live and learn the essential skills required to get people on the dancefloor.
I have been fortunate enough to connect with some fantastic people along my journey so far that have provided me with opportunities I couldn’t dream of. Alongside DJing I have partner of Vivid Presents; an event company, where I have proudly shared the stage with some of the worlds largest artists.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Having spent so many years on the dancefloor it was always a dream to have the ability to make people move. Aside from listening to house music daily on my runs I often create my own DJ sets to share. I have just launched my new podcast ‘Melodic Sessions’ where I upload free mixes by myself and some fantastic global artists. To me it is all about sharing my love for music. Seeing people smiling, dancing and for a short time enjoying the moment, is a feeling like no other.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Seeing how my music has organically grown over the years and through many contacts and supporting other artists 2024 is certainly shaping up nicely. I feel now I have the confidence to believe in my music and share it to anyone that wants to listen. Having dialled in my DJing, business plans and social media game I have been provided with some great opportunities which only continue to drive me on knowing that now I have the self confidence to share my passion.
