Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dayra Fyah. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dayra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
The first dollar I earned as a creative artist, was when I collaborated as a performer and rapper for Naomi Rincón Gallardo’s project, called “The Formaldehyde Trip”, which was presented at the SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Dayra Fyah, I was born in Mexico City in the late 80’s I started in the Hip-Hop Kultura doing graffiti, now I am a Rapper, Self Defense Instructor and Cultural Manager. I have used rap as a main tool to spread messages of social protest, my work reflects strength, reflection and struggle. Rapper since 2004, I presented as a soloist in 2009 the “Demo 2006-2008” and in 2012 my first EP titled “Muda Nunca”, currently I remain current in the rap scene with singles like “Mi delito”, this theme is a reflection on the growing wave of FEMINICIDIOS in Mexico. In 2021 I managed the production of the Mixtape Abya Yala Armada de Palabra where I also collaborate as a rapper along with 4 female rappers and cultural promoters of this territory, we address issues as women of Abya Yala, from our experiences and as feminist rappers.
In 2022 I was part of a campaign called Her For She, of an international chocolate brand, which invites recognition among women, seeks empowerment, union and visibility of sorority.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
HipHop itself is a sign of resilience, a peaceful way of life, a way for conflict resolution. For me writing my songs is a pure act of resilience, talking about the situations that happen, helps to heal, and to see them with perspective to get out of that situation.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
All the time, since I chose to be an independent artist, I have been in a back-and-forth between rap, my business, my studies and my family. It’s hard when the message you convey is difficult to digest, but I talk about what moves me, I don’t rap to be famous, I rap to make people uncomfortable, to reflect and to raise awareness. So I have other jobs to support my economy and my art.
