We recently connected with Daylan West and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Daylan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
A key moment in my career was when I hosted a wellness series at a community workspace called Kinfolx. It was the first time I shared my work in person with the community, and it was a powerful experience. I opened up about my personal journey—the struggles I’ve faced, the growth I’ve experienced, and the practices that have helped me along the way.
This event helped me see how far I’ve come, but also how much this kind of work is needed in the community. It reminded me that while I’ve made progress, there’s still a lot more to do—both in my own journey and in supporting others. Hosting the series showed me the impact of sharing my story and my work, and how important it is to keep pushing forward, not just for myself but for others as well.
Daylan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Daylan, a personal development coach, mindfulness advocate, and author of the Day2Day Journal. My journey began when I realized I was stuck in complacency and needed to make a change. Through personal development and mental health practices, I found my way forward and decided to help others do the same.
I offer guided journals, wellness workshops, and mindfulness events to help people improve their mindset, habits, and self-awareness.What makes my work unique is that I share real-life experiences and practical tools that people can relate to and use in their own lives. My focus is on creating open, supportive spaces for growth, especially within the Black community, where conversations around mental health are often overlooked.
I’m especially proud of the Black Men’s Mental Health series I hosted, where I helped create a safe space for Black men to connect and grow. Seeing the impact of that work reminds me why it’s so important.
If you’re new to my work, I want you to know that I’m dedicated to helping people find their way and improve their lives. My brand is all about making personal development and mindfulness accessible, so people can live more fulfilled, mindful lives.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe my reputation in the market has been built on authenticity and consistency. Being open about my own personal development journey has allowed people to relate to me on a deeper level. I share my real-life experiences, both the challenges and the progress, which makes my work feel genuine and accessible.
Consistency has also played a big role. Whether it’s through the events I host, my Day2Day Journal, or the podcast, I make sure to regularly provide value and show up for my community. Over time, people have come to trust that I’m dedicated to this work and committed to helping them improve their lives.
Another factor has been my focus on creating safe, inclusive spaces, especially for Black men, where mental health and personal growth are prioritized. By addressing the unique challenges faced in these communities, I’ve been able to connect with people in a meaningful way, and that connection has helped build my reputation.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was thinking that asking for help or showing vulnerability meant weakness. Growing up, I believed I had to handle everything on my own to succeed, especially as a Black man. I thought showing any weakness would make me seem less capable.
That changed when I went through a tough time and realized I couldn’t do it all by myself. I started asking for help, talking to mentors, and leaning on friends. Instead of making me weaker, it actually made me stronger and helped me grow.
Now, I see vulnerability as a strength, and I encourage others to ask for help when they need it. It’s a key part of growth and becoming better.
