We recently connected with Daye’Jah Coates and have shared our conversation below.
Daye’Jah, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I started my business as a freshman in college. If I could go back in time, I would definitely start my business sooner. I spent a great deal of time putting in hard work for different jobs as a teen, and although I gained valuable customer service skills, I can’t help but to think of the things I could’ve accomplished had I had the entrepreneur mindset that I do now. All in all, I’m grateful for the process!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started Daye’JahVu Aesthetics (Daye’JahVu Minks at the time) as a college freshman in November 2017. The idea came to me after seeing an advertisement for a local lash extension class. Being that I was a new college student, I didn’t want to be under the pressure of strict work schedules, working late nights, etc. It turned out that having a business, or what I thought was a ”side hustle” at the time, was very convenient as college can be very demanding.
I began practicing lash extensions on my family, friends, and roommate to create a portfolio for advertisement and to build clientele. To my surprise, people began inquiring quickly! Before I knew it, I was a “traveling lash tech”.
I traveled for a short period of time before I moved back home from school and began taking clients there. I fell in love with being a lash tech. I gained not only clients, but a strong and loyal support system! It was just amazing to see how I could make these ladies feel beautiful and give them time to just kick back and take a load off!
After lashing from home for a few years, I decided to look into esthetician school. I began school in January 2021 and finished in July of the same year. There I found a whole new passion for my work. I was introduced to waxing, body contouring, facials, massages, brow art, etc.
From there, I moved into my first business location and turned Daye’JahVu Minks into Daye’JahVu Aesthetics. I now offer body contouring services like non-invasive liposuction and buttock enhancements, full body waxing, lash extensions, brow wax and tint, full body massages, and will have facials available for booking soon. A one-stop spa where women can come in one way and leave out brand new inside and out. Daye’JahVu Aesthetics isn’t just a place or job, it’s an experience. It’s the place my clients look forward to after a long week! I know some people think of the beauty industry as shallow, but to me, to us, it’s so much deeper! I love to boost confidence and to be able to give my clients a space where they can fully relax, unwind, and have some peace because self-care is very much necessary.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I shared before that I began my lash career while in college. I was a nursing major at SIUE and completed 2 full years before deciding that it wasn’t for me. My main reasonings for pursuing the career was simply because I love to help people, I had some interest in biology, and my mom is a nurse. However, when I started lashing I realized how much I loved entrepreneurship. It showed me a side of me that I don’t think I knew existed. It brought out all of the creativity, resilience, hunger, and just a whole new way of thinking. I wouldn’t change it for the world!
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
Since I do body contouring, I decided to create and sell a product I call “Tummy Tuck Gel”. I gave out a few jars to some friends and had them take before and after photos of 1 week of using the gel. Once they finished, I posted their results in a popular Facebook group for my area. To my surprise, the post blew up overnight! After contemplating on actually releasing the product for so long, it was amazing to see the feedback and amount of orders that I received! It even brought in more clients for other services. For about the next week straight I received orders nonstop from this one post. I was so excited and grateful! I still have loyal clients today who found me in that group.
