Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dayanis Orellana. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dayanis, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
In my free time, I used to knit simple things like beanies for me or for my daughter, and also crop tops. It was an entertainment for me. I would share my knittings on my social media, until one day a women contacted me, asking for me to knit for her a baby clothes set for her granddaughter that was about to be born. I got very nervous, I didn’t know how good of a job I was going to do, but I accepted the challenge. And we ended up loving the results. I shared my first baby clothes set and since then I am getting more customers.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I learned how to knit when my daughter was about 8 months old, she is three years old now. I used to be home all day with her and I thought I needed to do something just to keep myself busy. I used to knit scarfs, beanies and crop tops for family, friends or for myself. At that time, I didn’t see it as a business. I then started a full time job and I didn’t have the time to keep knitting, so that’s when I stopped. Now I have a full time job, my other business, but I still find the time to knit. I bought everything I needed to start knitting again, tape measure, yarn, needle, everything, and just started to knit what I learned two years ago. When I first made a baby clothes set, I felt so proud of myself and I couldn’t wait to share it with my friends and family. I love when the customers get back to me saying how they love how the clothes look, and that they think it’s perfect and that they loved the colors, the details, it makes me so happy. People are so creative, sometimes they give me the idea and I just put my hands to work, always trying to make their wishes come true. For me is very important for the client to love the results of my work.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I always try to connect with the audience by sharing the process of their orders. Making short videos of knitting and packaging orders is a way to connect with the audience. I take the time to thank them every chance I have for their support. Also, asking them what they would like to see on my business page is a way to connect with my followers. I believe my audience is growing because of the way I connect with them. I am a mother and a wife, I sometimes share my free time or family time and let them know who I am.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele is sharing a different work everyday. I try to have something new done by the end of the day, so I can post it on my social media the next day. Having variety and keeping my business pages active brings more clientele.
