We recently connected with Dayana Aleksandrova and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dayana, thanks for joining us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
I started my entrepreneurial journey with next to no capital. After struggling to find a job post-college graduation, I did a series of odd jobs, including door-to-door sales, worked the reception at a gym, I even made juice for a living at one point. In 2016, I landed a job at a tech startup. It looked amazing – on paper.
I had a flashy office, a team, a brand-new Mac, but I was miserable. I started experiencing symptoms of depression where I’d feel no sense of purpose or clarity. I’d spend my free time sleeping or I would numb my weekend by going out drinking with friends. Something had to change. I craved freedom and wealth.
So in the summer of 2017, I made a drastic move. I quit my job, sublet my room, and bought a one-way ticket to the Dominican Republic to live cheaply in a tree house. I was determined to build an online business and wouldn’t rest until I figured it out.
It was scary. But to me, it was either making that scary move or staying stuck for another 10 years.
So I lived in a small tree house with curtains for walls nestled between a bunch of palm trees in the jungle. I had decent Wifi from a resort nearby. I applied for work as a writer online and landed my first retainer. It paid me the same as my startup job. But now I had unlimited freedom.
Today, I run a multiple 6-figure business as a marketing and mindset coach. What I would do if I had to start over with next to no budget is:
1) I would clarify my mission – what would I like to do, how, and for whom? What is my framework?
2) What’s the minimum baseline standard I need to uphold to be safe? Can I cut my housing expenses, are there other ways I can save money?
3) I would learn how to pitch myself to potential clients and I would get really good at sales – because you need exposure and sales skills to bring in capital. This is what I teach my community and coaching clients today.
4) I would build out my online presence – this means posting regularly on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn (pick your favorite platform) as well as doing podcast interviews, guest posting, and garnering media attention
If I was able to build a multiple 6-figure business from a tree house, anyone can.
Dayana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Certified Mindset + Marketing Coach.
My mission is to help multi-passionate, creative entrepreneurs gain clarity, build strategic business plans, and start (or scale) their online businesses so that they can gain more freedom in their lives.
I bring almost 10 years of experience and have worked on advertising campaigns worth $8M. I combine this with my 24 years of mindset work – because you can not have a thriving business and a life of freedom without wiring your mindset for success first.
To date, I have coached hundreds of entrepreneurs. One of them went from a freshly unemployed school teacher to landing a $65,000 gig as a marketing specialist. Another who works in the wealth management industry has gained unshakeable confidence and is now laying the foundation to launch her very own offer – empowering women to invest.
My framework consists of 3 parts:
Expansion (uncovering and overcoming limiting beliefs such as scarcity mindset and anxious-avoidant money attachment)
Visibility (I help my clients create a content bank, start posting consistently, gain media attention, empower them to show up and speak on video without feeling like an ‘impostor,’ we work on launches and community building)
Activation – nothing gets done without action. Under this pillar, we focus on mastering the sales conversation which I teach in 8 steps, packaging irresistible offers, and actively pursuing our goals in a step-by-step roadmap.
One hundred percent of my clients report their confidence skyrocketing, from a 2 t oan 8.5 in as little as 13 days of working with me. They also report feeling relieved, more clear, supported, and empowered to “take on the world.”
Besides online entrepreneurs, I am here to mentor those who would like more freedom and satisfaction in their lives in their current job. This may look like performing better at work so you receive a bonus, feeling in control of your day and relationships through boundary-setting and time management – I am here to help you see fast results.
What sets me apart is that I walk the talk.
I was born and raised in Bulgaria in the excruciating years after the Soviet Union fell. My family lived in deep scarcity and had to cue to buy 1 loaf of bread for all 5 of us (including my grandparents). I was bullied severely for 8 years because I wore glasses and braces.
Then, when I was in the 10th grade, I won a full scholarship to finish high school in New Hampshire. After that, I landed a $250,000 scholarship to study at Trinity College in Connecticut. I’ve always forged my own path and this allows me to believe unconditionally in my clients, no matter their background.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I like to joke that I am the ‘Queen of Pivot.’ I have pivoted 3 times in the last 3 years. And this is because I’m multi-passionate, as I’m sure you are too.
While some see the pivot as a really scary step, I see it as a natural evolution.
In 2020, I pivoted from writing blogs at $50 a pop to full-time copywriting with multiple $5K retainers per month.
In 2021, I pivoted from writing copy for coaches to becoming a coach myself and monetizing my practice from day 1.
In 2022, I pivoted into the educator and mentor role, creating and launching 3 programs in 3 months that resulted in a multiple five-figure launch.
I love change because it’s a part of life. And I’m here to support those who want to evolve and build something of their own.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I am very active on Instagram where you can find me by looking up my first and last name. I have created content consistently for the last 3 years.
I’ve done so by becoming very strategic to minimize effort and maximize impact.
I have a 3-step content creation system that allows me to create new, juicy posts in record time and have enough on tap to last me a month if I chose not to work.
I also love podcast interviews – they have been very helpful in growing my audience. There are two ways I leverage to gain invites – one is active, where I use my personal database of contacts to pitch myself. The other one is more passive, where contacts come to me and I use my pitch template to secure opportunities in as little as 10 minutes per day.
Whatever you feel most passionate about – go with that. But you must be visible.
Because nobody will buy if they don’t know you exist.
