We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dawson Persyn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dawson thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I think I always knew, music has always been special to me. Around the time I was thirteen my family and I had a storage shed that we kept a lot of old stuff in. One thing I found in there was my sister’s guitars and amp from when she used to play in high school sometime in the late 90’s. I brought it home with me, “tuned” it to something I thought sounded pretty, and played it every day. Ever since then I’ve always wanted to make music that expresses a feeling and shares it with someone who’s felt that exact same way, like the songs that did the same for me. I wanted to have a conversation. Early on I was a bit shy with sharing my art, and started seriously pursuing a music career in 2018 when I shared a few demos on soundcloud.

Dawson, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Dawson Persyn, I live in Boerne Texas, I’m in a two piece band called Murdered Out and I also make solo music under the name Tangled Mane.

I think what sets me apart from other musicians is my focus on the emotional aspect that music conveys, not only through sound but through the lyricis as well. For Murdered Out, our sound is very angsty and in your face alternative rock. For my solo project, my music is all very personal, and is a way of me sharing my experience in the hopes it helps others that may feel the same wrapped up in an alt indie sound.
I’m most proud of my first step into sharing my music, I think other musicians can relate to the feeling of what you’re creating never being “perfect”, and often stops us from sharing what we have to offer. Releasing my first single was definitely a huge step for me in being happy with sharing what I’ve spent so much of my time on with my listeners.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
When I see people enjoying what I’ve spent all my time and effort on, and believing in what I do, nothing that beats that feeling. Whether it’s ,at a show, and the crowd is really feeling the music, or online with some comments and support, it opens my eyes to just how much of an impact my art can have on the world. There’s nothing more endearing than hearing that something I created has really resonated with someone else.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Support local! Go out to shows or art expose’s in your area, and through that find artists who you believe in. Sharing one of their songs or other forms of art on social media can be a huge way to help them get discovered and grow as an aritst. Tell your friends, so they tell their friends. Find someone who speaks to you, and share their message with those around you. All it takes is a little bit of community to see growth in your local art scene.
