We recently connected with Dawson Dutcher and have shared our conversation below.
Dawson, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Absolutely! From what my parents have told me, I have always been very tactile by creating things using my hands. I used to build LEGO cities when I was 4 years old. I have always enjoyed being creative and artistic in whatever I do. This is the best decision I’ve ever made. I’ve worked a couple of other hourly jobs that I despised. Doing the same thing everyday and working off a time clock is not my idea of a creative environment. It’s extremely mundane.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
After graduating high school, I started my own ceramics business called “Dawson’s Designs, LLC”. I specialize in making table-top water fountains which has been very successful at the art festivals I’ve participated in throughout Arizona.
I like working with my hands because it stimulates my mind. I was diagnosed, around the age of 5, as being high-functioning on the Autism spectrum. I don’t let the label of Autism define me nor limit my dreams and goals.
I have early childhood memories of my grandmother taking me to art fairs in Fountains Hills, AZ. I can remember the huge fountain shooting in the air in the middle of the lake and I think that might have had something to do with creating the art that I produce.
I take great pride in showing people that young adults on the spectrum can be independent and follow their passion in what they love to do in life. I’m currently participating in both farmers markets and art festivals throughout Arizona. The season is just ramping up and I’m excited to unveil my artwork to the public. My website features my current inventory along with a special product I call, “The Cat Fountain”. I took a creative twist and put a cat face on the front of these fountains and they’ve been flying off the shelves! You can check out my current inventory at www.dawsonsdesigns.com as well as see pictures from past art shows on my Facebook and Instagram pages:

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, I really enjoy when people send me pictures of my fountains that they bought. It’s interesting to see where they put them: bathrooms, offices, kitchens, patios, etc. I really get a kick out of knowing that my fountains are being bought and enjoyed, nationwide.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to eventually make custom fountains for people. By this, I mean taking an idea that someone is interested in and then creating a fountain around it. Right now, I am primarily working art shows and farmers markets to get my name out there. I’d like to eventually work in my studio to cater both custom fountains and pre-built fountains.
