We recently connected with Dawn Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dawn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
Over three years ago, when I was a freshman in college, I lost my Bestfriend and following that tragic event I was bitten by a snake. Growing up I was always a plus size girl and it took some time to learn to love the skin I was in. Fully confident, I began to strut my beauty. When I was bitten by the snake I was 311 pounds, walking around at The University of Texas at Austin with a boot on my foot and it was very tiring and unbearable. I knew from that moment I needed to make a change to become a healthier version of me. After a couple of months of healing I started my fitness journey, and now 100 plus pounds down I am inspiring many to go after their goals, practice self love, and strive to be the best version of themselves.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I became a fitness trainer in June 2022. After pushing myself to lose over 100 pounds, become stronger, and define my physique I knew that I could help others as well. When I starting my journey, my main focus was being in a Caloric Deficit, which is the main tool to losing body fat. I did tons of research and educated myself so that I could help others. I currently train at The Body Shop HTX located in Houston, Texas. I also create customized nutrition plans that gives people a starting point for counting calories and macros. This plan does not tell you exactly what to eat but instead gives you options to choose from. I also have created beginner friendly workout guides for people who are starting to follow and become stronger along their journey.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The fitness world within Social Media is super saturated with tons of people advertising quick fixes. I use my story to help people understand that the journey is about making lifestyle changes. I provide Youtube videos of my struggles, because the journey is a roller coaster to be very transparent, instead of only posting my wins.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
The most helpful tip for me is to constantly keep educating yourself. Being in the fitness industry, its constantly evolving so its super important to stay up to date and learn to work with different clients, also learning how to help them reach their goals.
