Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dawn Sands. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Dawn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
NRG Nutrition Ready to Go mission statement is “Helping you build a Sustainable Relationship with Food”. This mission was driven by my experiences of cancer in my family. The desire to change eating habits and practices and the understanding that food can heal and hurt through my own experience is the number one reason NRG was created.
I believe that if NRG can continue create and offer a diverse menu of tasty healthy food we will give the community an option to make better choices and have a better relationship with food. I have been asked why relationship? A relationship with anything has good and bad days and its just like that with food. Food has the ability to make us happy, anxious, miserable, painful, of comfortable. Creating good eating habits is key to feeling your best.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a former offshore banker with a Bachelors Degree in Finance. I have always been drawn to having my own business because I grew up around my Dad and Mom family businesses. I always admired their handwork and creativity in the many businesses they owned and knew one day that I would have my own businesses.
I actually started a Car show along with my husband as my first business. This show ran for about 2 years on our local television and was sponsored by Shell Gas Station. Next I started a fresh juice business in 2015 with my brother. This I would say was the prelude to NRG. After resigning from Credit Suisse Bank in 2018, I decided to launch the business I had been planning for a while. I knew the first thing was to bring more healthy options of eating to The Bahamas. I wanted to satisfy my own need first which was finding a restaurant with a menu that had tasty food with healthier options and Gluten Free options.
NRG signature products are its Smoothies that are sweetened with Dates, are all fully vegan, Press Juices that contain no sugar or water and taste amazing, Quinoa plates and other Meals, Burgers and wraps, Conch Chowder and the variety of specials of chefs create on a daily basis. We also offer breakfast, smoothie bowls, some sweet treats. We are also the local retailer for sun warrior so we sell vegan proteins and vitamin supplements as well.
Our customers look for us to provide healthier options and they can trust us to do that. We have customers who have been with us for the almost 5 years and we are so proud of our impact in the community. We are dedicated to ensuring that we stay create and true to health and will continue to revise and alter to ensure we are always on top of healthy eating in The Bahamas.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I started my business from personal savings from my 15 year career in the banking industry. My motto, ‘its not how much you make but how much you save”
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think maintaining a high quality of ingredients and product with consistency in taste, cleanliness, and most importantly a good team to execute it, is the reason for success to date.
