We recently connected with Dawn Mullarney and have shared our conversation below.
Dawn, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
I appreciate the opportunity to share the story behind Unique Connector, a name that encapsulates not just a brand, but a pivotal journey in my life.
The seed for this name was planted during a very challenging time – where I had a health hiccup that landed me in the ER and then a multiple day stay in the hospital, while there they thought I had a stroke at the age of 35. Come to find out I was diagnosed as a migraine syndrome with stroke-like symptoms due to being over stressed, this episode was quite the wake-up call, prompting a deep self-reflection on my life’s priorities and passions.
During this period of introspection, I realized the extent of my workaholism. My routine was grueling – starting my day at 6 am, juggling all the roles I had from sales, business development, client management, marketing, event planning, podcasting, to operations. My evenings were spent at networking events, three to four nights a week, all while balancing the responsibilities of being a wife and a mother. This relentless pace was unsustainable, and my health scare underscored the urgent need for change.
Inspired by this realization and while recovering, I launched an Instagram account named Unique Connector. This name, initially a beacon during my recuperation, ultimately became the foundation of my business. It represents a journey from a shy individual to a pivotal connector in the corporate world – someone who thrived on fostering introductions, belonging, and recognizing the unique potential in others.
Deciding to leave the corporate world behind and forge my own path was a testament to the lessons learned from my health scare and the unsustainable pace of my previous lifestyle.
In essence, Unique Connector embodies my journey of personal growth and the universal need for connection and recognizing our uniqueness. The pandemic brought to light how essential it is to have supportive people around us, creating a sense of belonging. It also reminded us of the importance of celebrating our individuality. Each of us is unique, with a special purpose that invites us to shine brightly and share our distinct qualities with the world. Unique Connector is more than a brand; it’s a commitment to nurturing connections that respect each person’s individuality, building a community where everyone feels seen, appreciated, and inspired to showcase their uniqueness.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those who may be learning about me for the first time, my name is Dawn, and I am the founder of Unique Connector. My diverse career across various industries has given me the opportunity to have quite the unique skill set and perspective, which I now leverage to benefit my clients and my business.
My Journey:
I started my professional career while still in college, working on campus throughout the year. After graduating, I joined a construction company, initially focusing on payroll and invoicing. Quickly, my responsibilities expanded all the facets of the business from logistics, working in parts and service departments, and finance. This experience built a strong foundation in operations and the ability to multitask in high-pressure environments.
Seeking growth, I transitioned into the banking sector where my career truly began to flourish. Starting as a teller, I made my way to the executive wing and then into the wealth management department. Over a decade, I moved through various roles and by the end I was involved in all the things- sales, business development, client relations, event planning, marketing, podcast hosting, and operations.
During this time, I also took on a leadership role as the president of the WI Dames Chapter, leading a group of successful women leaders and entrepreneurs.
Following a significant health scare, I reassessed my lifestyle and career, leading me to leave banking to explore IT staffing with a client. This shift not only broadened my industry knowledge but also highlighted my previously unrecognized strengths.
What I Offer:
At Unique Connector, I provide personal coaching, workshops, speaking engagements, and customized programs and events that focus on enhancing networking skills, communication, personal branding, and strategic relationship building. My aim is to empower individuals and businesses to achieve success by fostering authentic and productive connections.

What Sets Me Apart:
My unique advantage lies in the extensive experience I bring from working in varied fields such as construction, banking, and IT staffing. This varied background provides me with a holistic approach to addressing the complex challenges my clients face.

I take pride in my ability to navigate and succeed in multiple industries, each shift driven by a deep-seated desire to learn and challenge myself, culminating in the bravery to venture out on my own. My journey underscores the importance of connections and embracing one’s unique path, which forms the cornerstone of Unique Connector.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the most profound transitions in my life was leaving the corporate world to carve out my own path. This shift was not just a change in career but a pivotal moment of personal transformation and unlearning.
As a high achiever in the corporate environment, I was always fixated on what was next. The constant drive to achieve more, to climb higher, and to never settle had me perpetually looking forward without ever pausing to celebrate the milestones achieved or to appreciate how far I had come. This relentless pursuit was ingrained in me, but it wasn’t fully aligned with my true self.
Upon stepping away from that world, I faced the significant challenge of unlearning these ingrained behaviors. I had to teach myself to view life through a new lens, one that prioritized values that resonated more deeply with who I wanted to be. The most significant unlearning was realizing that work is just one aspect of life. It will always be there tomorrow, and it should not come at the expense of what truly matters—family, health, and personal well-being.
Moreover, I learned that in the world of entrepreneurship, no one is constantly looking over your shoulder. This freedom was both liberating and daunting. It taught me that I could make my own choices and steer my life and work in directions that align with my values. I embraced being kind-hearted, genuine, and true to myself without the need to wear the masks that were once necessary in my previous roles.
Witnessing and Experiencing Growth
Unlearning the high-achiever mindset also meant learning to stop and recognize the growth along the way. It meant celebrating the successes, no matter how small, and acknowledging the journey, not just the destination. This process of unlearning has been both challenging and immensely rewarding. It has allowed me to realign with my core values and pursue a life that feels more genuine and fulfilling. It’s a journey of continuous growth and self-discovery, and one that I am proud to share with others who might be facing similar crossroads.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building an audience on social media presented unique challenges given the strict regulations in the corporate world where I began my career. Despite these constraints, I was able to carve out a significant presence online, which laid the foundation for my personal brand and later, my business, Unique Connector.
How I Built My Following Despite Corporate Constraints:
-Navigating Restrictions with Creativity: The regulations meant I had to be particularly creative with my content. Instead of direct promotions or sales-driven posts, I focused on sharing universal insights about networking, personal growth, and leadership. This approach not only complied with corporate policies but also resonated with a broader audience.
-Building a Personal Brand Within Boundaries: I developed a personal brand that could thrive within and beyond the limits set by corporate guidelines. This involved highlighting my role as a connector and thought leader, which became equivalent with my online identity. I showcased how I could bring people together, highlight success stories, and share valuable lessons from events and conferences, all without overstepping my bounds.
-Leveraging Authenticity and Transparency: Despite the constraints, I maintained a high level of authenticity and transparency about my experiences and challenges. This honesty helped build trust and loyalty among my followers, who appreciated the genuine insights into my professional journey.
-Engaging with the Audience: I actively engaged with my audience by responding to comments, participating in discussions, and supporting others’ content. This two-way interaction was crucial for building relationships and a community that looked forward to my contributions.
-Continuous Learning and Adaptation: As social media platforms evolved, so did my strategies. I kept learning about new trends, tools, and methods to engage my audience, ensuring that my approach remained effective and fresh.
Advice for Those Starting to Build Their Social Media Presence:
For those just beginning to establish their presence on social media, my advice is to focus on authenticity and value. Even in a restricted environment, there is room to share your voice and insights in a way that can deeply resonate with others. Understand the rules, but don’t let them completely stifle your creativity. Use your limitations as an opportunity to think outside the box and find new ways to connect and engage with your audience.
Building a successful social media presence under corporate restrictions taught me the importance of adaptability and authentic communication. These lessons have been invaluable as I transitioned to running my own business, where I continue to apply them to grow and nurture my community.
