We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dawn Gregg. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dawn below.
Dawn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My husband and I endeavor to use our storytelling gifts via filmic avenues. We both have an industry background, married young after meeting on a set, and write as partners on each passion project we have in various stages of development. Currently, we have three ready to go screenplays that we would love to see turned into films and/or limited series. Two are family dramas, (Family Drama …is the name of our production company) and one is a Civil War era Western.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up on film and television sets due to my family’s involvement in the entertainment industry. Set tutored for much of my schooling, I was blessed to travel far and wide and received a behind the scenes film education. I did some acting and studied with Hollywood greats, Lilian Chauvin and Nina Foch during my USC Film School years where I studied Screenwrtiting. I married and actor and we naturally came together creatively.
My husband is a researcher. He loves to dig for interesting elements that bring depth to whatever we are working on. Writing dialogue that rings true is one of my strengths. We craft a story skeleton and take turns developing scenes and working out beats in a back and forth collaboration. With an understanding of character, mostly due to our experiences as and alongside actors, I’d say that our projects strive to bring authentic characters living in relatable circumstances to life.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Creatives are out of the box thinkers. This bent affects all areas of our lives, I think. I process life with the help of my camera lens and abstract painting. I take Art classes at the community college and Pottery classes at Parks & Rec. I use social media as an instinctive documentarian. I crochet and don’t refer to recipes when I prepare meals. I home-educated my five children for twenty years using an eclectic curriculum. I’m sure my lifestyle is fascinating to some observers.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Embracing a creative lifestyle brings with it a sense of freedom to honor the way in which I have been created. I truly believe our, gifts, talents, abilities, and bents, are gifts given to us to enjoy, nurture, and share. I believe my creative bent comes with intentionality and purpose. The most rewarding aspect of my journey has been in the revelation that my identity is not found in my creative work but in my Creator who inspires it all.
