We were lucky to catch up with Dawn Cooper recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dawn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I didn’t have a direction for my life. I was just living day-to-day, working a 9-5 job. I never wanted to own my own business. I was happy punching a time clock, working for someone else, having set hours and collecting my steady income. My (now ex) husband wanted me to quit my full time job and run his two companies. March 1, 2019 I quit my job, staring running his businesses full time, and he trained me to photograph real estate. I quickly fell in love with this “work”. I didn’t know what I was passionate about and what I wanted to do with my life, but my passion found me and I absolutely love what I do! Everyone these days seems to be a photographer! However, real estate photography have a certain niche. I also offer 3D, virtual tours and drone photos and video!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I had to decide if I was going to go back to the corporate world and get “a real job” again or continue with my new found love of real estate photography. At 46 years old, I decided to take a leap of faith and try my hand at this new career and I am so glad I did!! I just needed to change my mindset and flip the script I was telling myself! Once I did that, I hit the ground running!! I launched my real estate photography company Nov 1, 2019 and I’ve been growing ever since! Over the last 3 years, I have photographed over 800 homes (and AirBnB’s) and worked with over 125 realtors! I love making the houses stand out and look beautiful! They say, a “picture is worth a thousand words” and the visual presence is what usually draws us in initially. I’m honored to be able to represent that for my clients and help them make that sale for their clients!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My best marking and source for new clients has been networking and word of mouth. Since real estate has agents, brokers, and independent realtors, I see a lot of referrals being passed from one agent/realtor to another. When I get a call or email from a new realtor/agent, they usually tell me they were referred to me by another realtor/agent. I don’t get a lot of “I found you through a Google search” or “ I found your card at a coffee shop”. I love to have the personal referrals and know that my work is great quality and I have the integrity that seems to be lacking in some businesses today.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I was going through my divorce at the end of 2019, I felt lost and unsure of what to do career wise. Since I quit my full time job to run his companies, I didn’t know if I could make it as a new business woman. But I told myself to try it for a year and see if I could make this new found love a full time career. I could have sat on the couch and wallowed in my unfortunate circumstances or I could take the bull by the horns and rock this new job! Then March 2020 happened! COVID! Now what?! Some businesses closing down, some other jobs desperate for workers…. What to do? This was actually a great time for me! Business was booming. Since realtors couldn’t do live showings and open houses, they really needed to step up their marketing game for house listing! My business took off with the need to add virtual tours to their photos for the MLS posts. I have had an increase in revenue every year and this year is tracking about 30% increase so far and we still have 4 months left!
