We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dawn Benjamin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dawn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
Its funny this was a question in my coaching group. What do you want your legacy to be and how do you want to be remembered. It started from when I was a little girl, my mom would always say,” Never say can’t always say can”. So, whenever the quit mentality or not good enough or try next time came up the mantra and my mom were in my head. I want my legacy to be this woman never gave up on anything in her life. I taught my son the same principle and now he is such a go getter and returns the nurturing back to me at times. My company is about pushing women to be the best they can be and never give up on themselves. No regrets and no playing small. As Les Brown said, Live full and die empty. Leave your purpose here for others to follow and learn.

Dawn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was the director of finance of a nonprofit organization prior to leaping into entrepreneurship. From the time, I was a little girl I wanted to be my own boss. How I took the leap of faith… There was a need for a fundraiser for my church. I decided to put together an event for women’s empowerment. It was a tremendous success, and the women asked me to do it again. This time I added other speakers and vendors to the program. Then COVID hit and I rearranged things, and a friend asked me to coach her on life changes. Hence, I became an Empowerment Life Coach and the speaker I honestly believe was already within my inner being. My clients are dealing with the fear factor of life and believing the negative words in their thought process and speaking to them out aloud. Since the mantra taught by my mom is so strong, I realize the power of the words we speak. There are women so stuck in the,” I can’t or the never concept” that they stay stagnant and unhappy. Why because of fear of failure, procrastination and believing they’re not good enough. I love that I can help women change the conversation they are having with themselves which alters the trajectory of their life’s accomplishments and happiness. Women that work with me are taught my framework, The Spoken Transformation System. One of my proudest moments was my friend who asked me to coach her in life’s challenges. She is still involved in my company but in a different capacity. She always reminds me how my coaching changed her life. That is such a fulfilling position to be in because I only want women to be the best God created them to be!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to pivot just last year when I quit my job during the week. It was always on my mind, and I did quit my job years ago, but I had no plan. This time I did get a sign, and I jumped. There was a lot to pivot, personally day to day expenses, like mortgage and car payments. So now I am completely depending on my business to support my day to day. I always had a coach so I buckled down and made a vision board, goals, and a roadmap for personal and business growth. I have a morning routine, and direction and a daily schedule for my business. My mindset is key to the growth from employee to employer. Don’t get it twisted, there are moments, but I know and believe in the purpose and direction because you have to plan, write it down and believe in it, NO MATTER WHAT.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During my career, I was definitely a risk taker. My sister would always say what are you doing now, Dawn. I quit my job before I was ready, I was let go because of funding but through it all, I would remember the quote from my mom, never say can’t always say can so the words of positivity propelled me to never give up. I worked Uber and Lyft during those times because the market was slow. Resilience is never giving up or giving in. We were built for more, but it starts from the words coming out of your mouth. You are conqueror, you are more than enough, and I can make it happen!
