Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Davyon Augustus. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Davyon , appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am the happiest when Im creative and being able to do it full time successfully is an opportunity that should be afforded to all even though it’s only afforded to a few. No artist has dreams of existing within corporate America nor any system that doesn’t inspire their creative gifts. My advice to those wanting to live fully off their dreams or have outlet for them is to utilize the advancement of social media which has acted as an incredible vehicle for art and the monetization of that art. Social media has singlehanded afforded me and so many other creators an avenue to do what we love and evolve our businesses and brands to unparalleled heights. Prior to the World Wide Web people literally had to pursue careers through the brick and mortar of the entertainment industry, rely on gatekeepers and very limited opportunities to be seen and make money, but all that has changed thanks to the internet. Social media allows a single piece of art to gross millions of dollars in revenue along with being seen by millions! You can literally go from an struggling artist to an overnight success and wealthy within no time. So my biggest piece of advice would be for artist to get their work copyrighted/trademarked (whatever that art is) and utilize the internet to garner a desire, demand and audience for one’s art.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As previously stated in my 1st interview with this amazing company I am a pop culture commentator, writer & spiritual adviser. I went to gifted schools for the arts growing up, because I was singing, dancing and drawing coming out of the womb. The arts run in my family from having a mother and aunts who sung on the choir to a stepfather who was a recording artist to a grandfather who was apart of an all male singing band to cousins who were gifted in graphic designs and sports. My bloodline was filled with talent in so many directions and the ones that captured me had to do with visual art, writing and spirituality. Being a digital content creator allows me to bring all my interest into one space since digital media is visual based and because Im a commentator I get to teach and speak on any and everything. It wasn’t until I started doing YouTube several years ago and intentionally creating my brand that I stumbled across my love for commentary after people felt compelled and fascinated by my takes on current events. This led to me developing a particular niche for commentary and I’ve been growing an audience of almost 50k subscribers and garnering views as high as 100k on YouTube alone. Right now I don’t offer any particular services I just present my gift of commentary online with the intent to attract viewers to subscribing to my social media profiles and subscribing to my Patreon where I provide exclusive commentary on various subjects. What sets me apart is everything lol. My personal aesthetic are unique esp as a male, because I have an androgynous appearance that’s very stylistic, my production is very colorful, cosmic and of course my commentary is a unique blend of intellect and humor. I’m the most proud of my ability to make someone as intersectional as myself valuable and inspiring in a world where for so long people who were very alternative, different and considered weird often lived in the shadows of society. Being able to create space for people like myself and also be effective in healing and evolving others without having to rely on a traditional teaching methods, but be able to use entertainment to accomplish that is something Im very proud and grateful for.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Often time non-creatives (no disrespect) fail to support artistic people in their endeavors, because it doesn’t solely revolve around money and it’s an unpredictable industry that doesn’t have any objective set of rules that can ensure success. This fear in non-creatives can lead them to dissuade creative people from pursuing their passions no matter how well meaning the intent behind the dissuasion is. I’d like non creative individuals to remember that artistic people while yes desiring success like anyone else are also not always driven by the strong metrics of success like in the commercial work force. Often times artistic people are driven by their love for art and can find contentment in the humility that comes from living as a full time artist, Our work is often driven by a desire to change the world through the abstract and non conventional as well as by our personal fulfillment which can trump the lust of wealth and materiality that often times motivate non creative people to work in fields where there are clear advancements available. So even though the world of the arts maybe more unpredictable and initially not as lucrative as commercial work it’s no reason to not be supportive if the artist finds inner fulfillment from what they do and can reasonably support themselves from doing it. Everyone has a role to play in this world and it’s not the same role and this diversity is what makes the world so full of color and beauty.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that joy was in things whether than substance. So much of the philosophy of western society is about playing into someone else’s dream with the hopes that it will end in happiness for you and this is not true as so many are finally waking up to. Working for other corporations, networks, businesses and following suit with other people’s attitude of life to go along to get along has ruined so many people’s quality of life. It takes a lot of trials and deconstructing to find one’s personal liberation esp when you didn’t come from an environment that affirmed and nurtured individualism, but once you have it it’s profoundly freeing and changes everything. I was given a conformist script like most people coming into the world inheriting the expectations of family and the society one is born into, but no matter how much I tried to be the things I wasn’t for the sake of acceptance and safety in the world I knew I was not being true to myself nor was I happy. I came to the conclusion that I’d rather be disliked for who I truly am than loved for who I absolutely wasn’t and while that comes with the potential loss of the life you created as the person you never were in it’s place you’re given the opportunity to build and find the world that is in alignment with you. Don’t justify personal misery in the name of love for others. We have a sworn duty to first and foremost advocate for our own stability and wellness and then from there extend that wellness to all others, but it’s gots to be something we have 1st.
