We recently connected with DAVIS88 and have shared our conversation below.
DAVIS88, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most meaningful project to date was one I released last fall. The song and accompanying music video, titled “Get Up.”
I wrote the song in homage to my hometown Rockingham, NC and people from the Carolinas overall.
I used the video as a way to showcase my favorite parts of Rockingham and the coolest historical sites of the City.
I’ve always felt you should be proud of where you come from and the people who helped shape you as a person. I took this project as an opportunity to shine a light on that place and include a few friends who’ve helped me along the way.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a songwriter and musician from North Carolina. I am known for mixing Rock, Rap, and Country elements in my sound.
I began learning music in college while attending UNC Wilmington. Teaching myself to play songs on guitar and piano. A friend of mine eventually encouraged me to try singing and writing my own songs. One thing led to another and I found a studio in Wilmington and recorded an EP. I have been recording music ever since.
I often write and record in Nashville, TN on weekends. During the week I work my day job as an events coordinator in the Sandhills area. This has helped me understand how to navigate putting on my own events whether that be a concert, fundraiser, live stream or party. I’ve been able to learn a lot from both professions that can crossover to serve the other.
My earliest musical influences were classic rock and 90s country that my parents listened to in the car. My biggest influences came later when I was a young kid watching MTV’s show TRL. That included artists such as Eminem, Korn, Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit. I just loved the distorted guitars, hip hop beats and overall attitude of music at that time. I’ still try to follow whats new and current. I’ll take what I like from that and incorporate aspects of it into my music as well.
I am proud to make music that I feel can hype people up and motivate them. Whether that’s just starting the day or crushing a workout at the gym. That’s what I’d like my music to do. At the same time, some songs can just be a something fun to escape the moment and really just have fun and rock out. Any potential new fans can browse through my Spotify catalog and are sure to find something they like and can relate to in some way.
I’m proud to be from North Carolina. I am proud of my hometown Rockingham, NC. It’s a part if my story and it had a big part of shaping me into who I am.
I am certainly proud to be a songwriter and musician. I’m lucky enough to be able to release music on my own as an independent artist.
I’ve had two singles chart in the top 20 on FMQB radio charts over the years. New music is set to release in the coming months and I’m very excited to get these projects out into the world.
What sets me apart from other artists is that I don’t care what’s popular. I am going to make the kind of music I want to make… whether 2 people hear it or 2 million people hear it.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I believe non creatives or people who view art/artists as a hobby or side project may not understand how difficult it can be to get your work noticed and to get exposure. It can be extremely challenging to turn creative projects into a full time career. For example, a musician makes little to no money for songs they have recorded and released on Internet streaming services. Musicians will recoup their investment from building a social media following, earning sponsors, selling tickets to shows and merchandise. Musicians have to find a way to sell themselves. Their mission is not just to create great art, but to share art that people can connect with, believe in, and support. From there a person can turn art into a career.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me personally, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative is when you can hear or see people connect with you and what you are creating. Whenever someone drops a supportive comment on my socials or tells me in person what they dig about my music… that to me, is one of the biggest rewards you have as an artist.
On top of that, playing shows and visibly seeing people sing back to you the words and melodies you wrote in a dim lit studio or your bedroom… is the most inspiring and gratifying experience you can have as a musician.
